Hello! Come har all ye carologists, enthusiasts, & experts! I've a 2011 Audi A4 2.0 Tdi which over the past week or so is experiencing a humming noise while the engine is running. Its like a fan going somewhere? I've checked the radiator cooling fan & its not that as the humming sound is there even when the radiator fan is static. The engine idling speed is normal @ 800rpm when resting so its not that. Also the humming doesn't vary with increased revs. With heater/AC off it still sounds. Its not obvious above the engine noise on raising the bonnet but its quiet audible inside the car. Any ideas ...

Does it ever go away? Does it go away when you press the clutch? ?

I have the same problem in my Ford and its the fuel pump,I was told to replace the fuel filter first and if that doesn't work to replace pump.

Have you located what area the noise is coming from ?

Its not always evident. This morning on way to work it was there. This evening on way home it wasn't, but when I went out this evening (short run) it was there again

How about interference coming over the speakers?

E46 BMWs had something similar in the interior fan system. I think it was a resistor problem or something like that, not fully sure. If Touching Virus is around, he had this problem and sorted it himself.

You've been humming away to yourself unknowingly to good tunes on the radio, hence why you cant actually locate the hum and why it comes and goes!

Have you a car phone kit, picking up interference from something that would come out of the speakers? could be a loose/disconnected wire resulting in loudspeaker hum?

Does the noise persist when the car radio is off?

Could it be the lift pump in the fuel tank not shutting off, or particularly loud? (under rear passenger seats)

A servo for one of the flaps in the climate control not finding its home position?

And while you have the hum, if you switch off the engine and turn the key back to run position, can you still hear the noise?

The only phone kit I have is a thingy that plugs into the cigarette lighter - it's hardly that. Car radio on or off makes no difference. I cannot say where the noise is coming from other than its audible inside the car when the engine is running. On one or two occasions turning off & on the ignition did stop it. Tried that this morning though & it made no difference.

I've one of those push button thingys - so no 2 position. If you mean while the ignition is on but engine not running - no no sound!
