    Hi all,

A close family member is being treated by a consultant surgeon at one of the Dublin hospitals. After having an artificial medical piece inserted, it became infected during surgery. He's been there for two months now, trying to clear it, but antibiotics aren't working. Apparently infected plastic pieces are difficult to treat with antibiotics.

The surgeon says if there isn't an improvement within a week, the only option is to operate again to remove the infected piece. If left in, it could infect other areas. He says there is only a small chance he will survive this operation, but he cannot leave him with the infection.

I'm really scared now. I was wondering what options do I have? I'm sure he knows what he's doing and his team will follow his decision. Would it be possible for me to ask for a second opinion from another surgeon? Are there any experts from abroad I could contact for information?

    Any advice would be great,
    Many thanks

Yep, it's possible to ask for a second opinion - another consultant in the hospital may well provide it. Just ask the consultant to organise it.

Hope things go well for your relative. As we don't advise on personal situations or recommend specialists here, I'll have to close this thread.
