Cleaning golf clubs - do you?

Well I just read Greebo's misery of the waterlogged driver and it reminded me that I was going to post this.....

So a couple of weeks back I got a new golf bag. Jeez, you can't set it all up without giving the clubs a clean first I though to myself so I duly did so.

My process is bucket of boiling water, fairy liquid, scrubbing brush and elbow grease. generally stick all the clubs in the bucket for a few minutes, then scrub the heads and grooves, then place on a towel to dry off.

To be honest, if it had not of been for the new bag, I don't know when they would of gotten a clean...... I'm lazy! Having said that, I keep one of those 3in1 cleaning tools in my pocket as I play and would clean as I go.

Also all used balls in my bag got thrown in for a wash too. Unless they have cracks and are worn right down, they will be used, so may as well clean them too.

So do you clean your clubs?
    What's your process?
    How often?
Just the heads, or would you clean shafts & grips?
Do you wash your balls?

I only cleaned mine last night, i try to clean them every 5 or 6 rounds or so but with the weather being so manky lately ive cleaned them more often.

Yeah basin of warm water, tiny bit of WU liquid and a sponge, generally only clean the heads unless the shafts are especially manky, Ive been known to give my balls a quick dip also:)

So do you clean your clubs?
    Religiously.

    What's your process?
Hot water & washing up liquid. If in a hurry, baby wipes. Have a brush for the club head and sponge then afterwards. Alway dry off the clubs with a towel. Also check for any rust marks, brass brush of the small cleaning tool takes care of any of them.

    How often?
    After every round.

Just the heads, or would you clean shafts & grips?
Both heads and the shafts, the grips now and again but not every time

    Do you wash your balls?
If they are reusable, yes..and mark them before they go back in the bag.

The way I see it, I may as we'll give myself the best chance I can before I start the round.

Clean the clubs once a month from top to toe. Rub down the grip with a bit of sand paper.

As with you Stevie, I do occasionally wash my balls in the sink. Clubs too, betimes... ;)

Because I tend to wipe each club with a cloth as I play, they don't get too dirty really so the process doesn't take too long. The biggest issue is the eyes-raised-to-heaven look I receive from the boss when the kitchen sink is taken over....

Clean them once a year...whether they need it or not :)

Once a month top to toe. Change towel also and clean out bag completely and let it air.

How do people clean shoes? I use a rag and warm water with a very small bit of detergent but not sure it is good for the shoe.

I never clean my gear. However, last week I gave my putter a good clean and it's like new. So much so I had that "new club honeymoon" with it last night and holed everything. If this keeps up I'll clean it every day!

Shoes are a particular problem for me. I never seem to get round to cleaning them enough. Its like its too much trouble or something - even though I'd gladly pull the bag apart and clean clubs etc. without a thought!!

However, when I do manage to clean them, it does seem to make a big difference to how I feel once I'm on the course - probably just a mental thing...

Clean clubs after every shot with wire brush and towel (carry a towel that I wet half of for most rounds)

After a practice session clubs are usually manky so will clean from top to bottom inc grips (amazing how manky grips get)

Shoes are air cleaned after each round and always use show trees in them.
Cleaned with Cif and hot water every few months and polished.

Practice Balls cleaned every few months around winter, not so much in summer (dirty balls = dirty and scratched clubs, especially woods!)

I tend to not switch balls until its ready for the practice bag (the short game bag, keep the ultras for long game!) so no need to clean them. If reusing an older one it will get a clean on the first and most other tees.

    +1 on Loire
nothing like a fresh putter grip!

I clean the clubs every few weeks. Warm water and a bit of washing up liquid and Jif. Use one of them brushes for cleaning them, and use the wire brush side of it. Leave them soak in the water as you start cleaning them, Scrub direction of grooves to get all the dirt out, and then scrub grips and rince. You would be surprised the amount of dirt etc that comes off grips, and how grippy, tacky and better they feel afterwards. Still have original grips on my clubs and theyre probably 7-8 years old and still perfect. If grips are worn, rub with a relatively unabrasive sandpaper to remove smoothness from them and rough them up. Unfortunately golf balls dont last long enough to get dirty and need cleaning, just clean the ball I am using before putting on each hole if it needs be, with some old fashioned spit and my jumper sleeve lol

As for shoes, I have heard that clean, and rub with vasoline after every round is meant to do wonders for them lasting, (clean off vasoline after about 30 minutes)never tried it myself but Its meant to keep the leather waterproof and prevents them cracking.

Anyway i now clean the heads every month or so and the grips once a year since my survey - which reminds me to clean them again now coming into the summer, :D

Hi lads, any ideas or tips for cleaning white golfbags. Thanks, Ben.

Clubs clean after every round, warm soapy water and an old toothbrush. Balls also cleaned using the same process.

Shoes cleaned and polished after every round. Use baby wipes to clean leather part of shoes. Polished with waterproof leather care from the great outdoors. keeps them supple and wearable.

Clean them after every round. Usually just some water, , washingup liquid and a brush.

Then a soak every few weeks doing grips aswell.

I usually clean clubs after every shot. Just a quick rub with a wet towel. I would clean my ball before I start a round, but would like the clubs give it a quick wipe with the towel if it got really dirty. I would not go to the bother of cleaning every ball in the bag. I don't typically clean shafts or grips as they don't seem to get that dirty. I give them a quick rub with the magic towel should they need it though.

About once a month, usually before my society outing, hot water and dishwasher tablet for half hour, then brush the irons and towel dry.
Wash the driver/wood/hybrids with a wet towel.
Leave balls in the water after the irons for a swish and toweling, just whatever ones happen to be in the bag.
    Never touch the grips.
Once a year machine wash my Galvin Green stuff, couple of years old now and still like new.

Must try dishwasher tablet, seems quite popular.

I give everything a clean in the spring, bag, shoes, clubs the lot.

Clubs get dumped in our old glass recycling box with water and washing up liquid every few rounds. The air gun after the round keeps the shoes in tip top shape.

I only clean mine when I want to have a complete prick of a round the following day. That way I can ruefully stare down at my gleaming irons wondering why I wasted my Saturday scrubbing and had a complete non-event bastard of a Saturday night not drinking only to show up and scutter the ball around on Sunday morning. I look down, see my pristine irons, pull one out of the bag, top it 40yds and swear Im never going to the range or cleaning my clubs on a Saturday ever again.

How do you get away with that if you end up with pants legs covered in mud ?

So do you clean your clubs?
    Yes

    What's your process?
Get one of them small brush things. Usually spit into a towel or onto the club, attack it with the steel side of the brush, then the soft side of the brush, then towel dry it.

    How often?
    About once every 2 weeks.

Just the heads, or would you clean shafts & grips?
    Mainly the heads

Do you wash your balls?
Golf balls ? Nope - if it gets dirty, it ends up in the practice bag :)

I clean mine after every round with a bucket of water with some fairy liquid and an old tooth brush. Then I dip them in a bucket of cold, clean water to take the suds off and I leave them stand for a while to dry. I wipe them with a towel after ever shot to they tend not to be that dirty.

I mink oil my shoes a couple of times a year. It's fantastic stuff, keeps them 100% waterproof and the leather nice and soft. I polish them every couple of weeks when they lose their shine.

So do you clean your clubs?
    Not regularly,
    What's your process?
Bucket...hot water...washing up liquid..bristly brush like youd use to scrub a sink
    How often?
I'd say probably 3-4 times a summer season. I spit, wipe and clean grooves after every shot so cuts down the need for full clean.
Just the heads, or would you clean shafts & grips?
Just the heads. If you dont dry properly you can cause rust on shafts easily. If you let water creep in the grip can ruin it also.
    Do you wash your balls?
Ballwasher on a few holes on the course, would clean the ball I'm using, thats about it
