    Hi All

My dad is looking to change to one of these at the moment.

    The year is 2009

It would be very similar to this car.

    Think the gearbox is multitronic.

Any known issues that should be looked for ?

    Thanks

Generally pretty reliable. EGR intercooler can go, and I seem to remember there is a flywheel on the Multitronic box that goes eventually. Last one that came back here with high mileage had a horrible knock that I think was the flywheel, 207,000km on that one.

Timing belt due at 180k by the looks of things.

Personally, I don't like them to drive. Steering feels heavy (better from 09 onwards with the servotronic as standard, but still heavier than most other cars in the sector), and the response from the Multitronic box is very poor from a standstill. Press the accelerator and there's quite a delay before it goes. Usually press the pedal harder than required due to the delay, and just end up with the traction control light flashing - especially in the wet.

A Passat CC with DSG might be a nicer alternative.

Afraid he is after the estate version.

A friend of mine was saying the 2.0tdi are very unreliable. Is there truth to this or were they confined to a certain vintage?

The common rail ones are more reliable. The newer A4 that you are looking at would all be common rail. Another one to consider is a Superb estate. Will most likely get a newer, higher spec model for the same money.

I'd have something from one of the other VAG brands with DSG over the Multitronic in the Audi.
