How to read GMail on my smartphone?

Hi, my question might sound silly, and probably it is, but I'm stuck, so I have to ask someone smarter than me.
I have trouble getting into my GMail account on my android smartphone (Sony Xperia P with Android 4.2.2).
I have a GMail account that I access through the web, it works quite fine though I think it's a bit slow at sending and receiving messages. Anyway, when I tap on GMail on my smartphone it opens a page where it asks me if I want to use an existing account or create a new one. I go for an existing account, I type the required address but it says that that account already exists. Alright, what a news!
If I insist it says that my account need sync, but still it doesn't show me my account.
So what do I have to do to unlock this situation?
    Thanks so much!

Remove the GMAIL account from your phone, and then try again.

I tried, but there's no such item in the menu, I can only add another account :(

Try and clear data & cache for the Gmail application.

Clear the app cache and then go to settings accounts and do a sync of your Google account

I did it and I have done it again, no changes...

Clear the app cache and then go to settings accounts and do a sync of your Google account

I cleared cache and data (actually data only, the cahe was empty), then I went to setting accounts and my GMail address is not in the list.
So I said add existing account, but it says that address and password don't match and this is strange because they work perfectly on my PC.

EDIT: Forget it, it seems that after some attempts I succeded in this hard task :-) Thanks so much!
