    Hi all

Any advice on how to start claiming social welfare?

I moved jobs and unfortunately my contract is coming to an end and I will be looking for a new job but don't know how long it will take.

I've no idea how the social welfare system works and am unsure how to start claiming it while I look for a new job. I've worked for the last 10 years consistently in case that has any affect on how to claim.

Is there any particular documents I need to bring with me?
how long does it normally take?

    Thanks in advance :-)

    rsi number/card

    bring p45
proof of adress (bill or something)

in to the social welfare office, they'll start your claim and advise of anything else needed, if you don't have above docs, head in to open your claim and they will give you time (7days) to collect them

how long out takes to get paid is anyone's guess.

thanks so much for your reply very helpful.

one further question though - if it takes a while to get my p45 does that mean i can't start the process?

go in to sw as soon as you finish, let them know you're waiting on the p45. They'll open your claim and give you time to get it. When your claim is processed they'll back pay you to the first day you opened your claim

yes you can start the process without the p45, happens all the time

If you have a letter or email from your employer that should do until you are given your p45. You will also need photo ID.

You usually need a bill showing proof of address. I think the forms are online on their website so there is probably a list of things required just to give you an idea
