how do they work as such in a tractor.

there is a min/max level for the coolant in them. are they supposed to suck the coolant from the expansion tank into the rad itself. should you be filling the coolant up in the rad or the expansion tank?

Fill the expansion tank to within the marks
There is no Secret really. When the coolant heats it expands. The air pocket at the top compresses and allows the coolant room to expand. If you fill the tank too full then the coolant may have too little room to expand and excessive pressure will build in the system. It may just leak at the cap, but it could burst a pipe too.

Usually called a "Thermo syphon" system. Expansion bottle should not be airtight. Remember a lad at ag. college who bought a Renault 5 (this was a considerable time ago!) and the expansion bottle was a huge brown glass yoke. After one speedy run home from the pub, it exploded as we got out of the car. It had become airtight when the pipe to it expanded.
