UPC & FTP delays

Hey all, We've very recently moved to UPC business and we are finding a big delay in FTP. Each time we try it seems to take about 10 seconds to connect, we work on websites so this adds up considerably but mostly it's a pain in the ar*e. Anyone else have this problem or even better, a solution?

Using their router? Thats probably the issue if so.
