Going from Sky to UPC

Thinking of jumping ship as no prospect of VDSL from Sky. Is the process of switching to UPC similar to switching between ADSL providers? In other words do I just contact UPC and they will do all the grunt work? I'm just thinking that as UPC don't use a landline, does this cause any complication?

Yea, UPC should do the donkey work. No harm in making them work for their dough. If you need a landline, staying with Sky for that may be your best option. If not, ask UPC about it.

Thanks for that. I do want to hang onto a phone service and get the number ported over to UPC, I assume that is possible?

Its actually better moving to UPC than moving from DSL to DSL. As they're different systems they can be run in parallel.
    1. Order UPC
    2. Wait till UPC come and fit it(if needed, or post the box out)
    3. Give it a day or two to make sure it works
    4. Call UPC and ask them to move your number from sky, once thats done your sky account will be cancelled

You can still have landline phone with UPC, its just done via VOIP on the modem. Plug and play.

UPC cant fully cancel your Sky services, a number port would cancel the talk services, but may not cancel the BB. To cancel your BB you may need to call Sky (If you want to keep your number, tell the agent this so they don't cancel down the line before you port to UPC).

Normaly the provider who you are porting to will handle all the arrangements. Eircom got rapped on the knuckles for insisting that you had to give 30 days notice even if you ere out of contract and porting to another provider. Since that decision last year, none of the other providers have dared insist on notice.

In any case the OP can ask UPC to arrange the porting of the BB & Talk services as he still requires his landline. He is also likely to get a better deal by porting the full bundle to UPC.

IF UPC offer to do the complete switch then let them do it. However if you have a monitored house alarm (Phonewatch for example) the UPC system will not support it. So you'll possibly still need the landline for that unless you get a GSM dialer instead and that will depend on the alarm company.

I was asking about a complete switch to UPC, I don't need the landline as UPC will provision my phone.

UPC should tell you to call Sky to cancel your services, phone number and BB are ported separately. UPC don't need to port the BB, so it'll stay active on Sky's systems.

In the same vain, if you're are switching from UPC to an ADSL/VDSL provider, you would need to call UPC to provide your cancellation

Not true, as long as you are out of contract, when you port your number, everything will be cancelled. That was certainly the case when I moved from Smart Telecom to UPC.

Here are the steps I would follow that cause the least trouble:

    1) Sign up for UPC
    2) Wait for it to be installed and give it a day or two to make sure everything is working
    3) When happy, contact UPC and ask them to port your phone number over and cancel your Sky sub.
    4) Once your phone number is ported over, contact Sky and make sure that everything has been cancelled on their side.

Don't let Sky give you any rubbish about 30 day notice, as long as you are out of contract with them, that is that.

I'm just going from experience, that may have changed in very recent times, but up until recently, what I said is the case. If you let UPC do the switch, check your Sky online account or call them just to make sure
