Now's the time to get on the castle ownership ladder!

Bit of a joke - why pick a 'flat' that costs 550 k? Why not the penthouse that sold in London for 16 million?

Since when is a 'two-bed terraced house' a flat?

Oh, and 'Castle Leake' is not a castle.

    Thread and article fail.

So? If I buy a castle I expect a moat.

They even admit their mistake themselves:
Fifteenth-century Norman castle, converted into an eight-bedroom house. Sadly the battlements were taken off in the 17th century.

Anyone that would pay that much for an apartment needs to be locked in a dungeon.

Interesting article. I bet they're all pretty cold in the winter - I'd dread the heating bill coming in.

I'd imagine it would be damn expensive to heat a castle though, and a lot of them look like they need at least some work/renovation done to them.

Yeah it's a lovely looking house alright!

I thought it must me murder to heat up in the winter when I first read the thread. Although if I won the lotto I might be tempted to buy the tower castle in Cork.:p

I can't believe that big houses in the arse end of nowhere can be cheaper than small ones in some of the best parts of the capital city. This is groundbreaking stuff from the journalist. This is completely unique to the crazy Dublin property market too.

It can be clearly seen from the main road into Cork from Midleton. Have looked up for a long time and thought I want that place!

Yes and no. A cousin of mine owned one out wesht. 13/14th century Norman keep. Heating wasn't a problem. Remember they have incredibly thick walls and tiny windows and often low ceilings, so once the heat builds up it tends to linger. If you decided to modernise one and forego the bare stone look on the interior and stuck even the barest insulation on the walls a struck match would probably heat a room. :) I'd reckon they'd be a lot easier and cheaper to heat than say a large Georgian manor house.

I'd love one TBH. Though I'd avoid the mock medieval interior design vibe. I'd modernise. You'd get plenty of exercise with the stairs mind you.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Do the castles come with their own Peasants/Livestock/Arable Land?

I don't like the tacky extension they put on using normal cavity blocks. Looks like a bit of a Celtic Tiger folly to me

I know that in the UK, and it could well be the same here, that any additions have to be in a totally different style to the original building, so that could be why it doesn't fit in.
