Hi there, I'm 19 and on my provisional. I drive under a named driver but am looking for a new car. I have a 1.3 01 Ford Fiesta as of now but want to upgrade to a Golf or maybe a Civic. I'm not a boy racer before I get the abuse. Does anyone have any suggestions to a car maybe on DoneDeal etc?

    Thanks.

Let us know your budget, how many km you plan to do yearly??

Budget for the car would be about 1500 for the car (not including insurance, etc)

Im a student so it won't be heavy usage. Whatever is considered 'typical'

Insurance company will kill you on a civic, I'm 31 or 32 and my insurance on a 3.0 jaguar was less than I'm paying on a 1.8 civic now.

Well in that case I will stick with the Golf :D

Probably still gonna be expensive. Golf n Civic considered "boy racer" cars by insurance companies

I disagree, many of my friends have a Golf and are paying reasonable amounts. A Golf is very versatile and suits a huge demographic of people

Still get a quote before you buy one :)

Are you able to do so? For some reason I thought you needed the car! Might pop into the broker Monday and ask. Thanks!

The op will have no trouble getting insurance on an Irish/uk Civic as a named driver.

Going out on their own or trying to get insured on a jap import is a different story though.

So you reckon an Irish/UK Civic shouldn't be too bad?

Try some online quotes from insurance companies and see what they quote. (or not as a lot may not quote at all)

Oh God no they're no good at my age. Even under a named driver they'd be throwing out quotes of 2 grand. Ain't nobody got time for that

    :D

True but that's not a completely unrealistic number. Young drivers get hammered on insurance no matter what they drive.

Sorry I just realized your on a learner permit. You might be better off getting your full license before getting a car. I still think you'll be able to get insured on an Irish civic without much bother and for not much/ if any more than the equivalent alternatives.

Well my current quote on the Fiesta is only around the €750 mark!

As much as I do like the Fiesta , I'm probably a bit big for it ha. It'd be nice if it was the size of a golf!

I'd avoid a civic if I were you, fabulous cars but I went from a 1.4 civic to 1.5 almera and got better cover & wife on learner permit as named driver for less than just myself on the civic, with full license and 3 years no claims at the time, aged 29, civic was heavily loaded, in a different insurance class. No experience of golfs though. Just my two cents, things may have relaxed in the last two years.

There wasn't much difference between a civic and a 00 almera for me, around €50, this was around 5 years back.

From what I've heard Golfs are being loaded lately too, because young lads have a thing for VAG's now. I would guess a 19 year old on a Golf would be paying north of E1500 for sure. But that's just a guess.

Isn't that mad? Shows how different people can have vastly different experiences of insurance companies. I know age/location etc can make a difference but sometimes you wonder where some companies pull a figure from.

Under a named driver? Surely it wouldn't be twice the cost of the Fiesta insurance!!

I also heard 1.4 boras are near impossible to insure due to their popularity by young drivers. I don't even know why their so well liked.

They seem to be on the rise actually, I agree with you, no appeal whatsoever.

OP what are your friends paying on a Golf? and are they on a named provisional?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

Golf's are on the insurance blacklist now too. You might be alright on a 1.4 Golf but you don't want a 1.4 Golf.

And Civic's are insane for premiums.

If you want something better without an absurd premium, why not try a Corolla or a Focus?

    Around the grand mark!

    And yes they are

    Why don't I want a 1.4 Golf ha. A Focus isn't a bad one actually forgot them

Because the 1.4 Golf is ****e.

Newer 1.4 tsi is a big improvement but an older 1.4 Golf isn't a nice car to drive. It's underpowered and generally has a ****e spec.

1.6 Focus or a Corolla would be spot on. The 1.4 Corolla is a lot better then the 1.4 in the Golf or Focus.

I've heard that they're underpowered alright. A corolla wouldn't be much bigger than a Fiesta would it though?

You won't know til you sit in one really. Personally I find them fine space wise for what they are.

Best advice though is get your full licence. It'll help a lot and therefore open up a wider choice of cars.

I know but it's just I don't like the Fiesta's size really. Any suggestion on DD for a car?

These 4 might be worth a look.

http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/99-ford-focus/6851468 - Bit overpriced imo but looks clean and long NCT.

http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/toyota-corolla-00/6882200 - Oil burning can be an issue with the 1.4 vvti, some of the more knowledgeable Toyota guys on here can probably tell you more. Looks clean though.

http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/1997-honda-civic/6916650 - Get an insurance quote and see. Those saloons are basically bulletproof and are nice to drive.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/nissan-primera/6908549 - Ditto!
