Hello, myself and herself are looking at either a 520 or e200 auto, 07/08.
Could anyone advise what kind of things to look out for?
    Thanks

Are you looking at petrol cars?

Either petrol or diesel. Not too bothered.
The 520s seem to be diesels and the 200s seem to be 1.8 petrol (from looking through donedeal.)
My wife will be doing the driving, I have a work van. She does about 300 - 400 km per week between work an kids.

520 petrol doesn't really cut it, you'd need a diesel or a bigger petrol engine. 520 petrol feels underpowered, the diesel is fine though.

Not sure about the Merc, take one for a spin and see.

If you are considering a petrol car then you need to ask yourself do you warrant the need for a diesel car at all.

    Thanks bazz,
I don't think the mileage warrants a diesel and I'd be inclined to go with the 1.8 petrol on the merc. Mrs Eric likes the 520, but as money maker pointed out, it's probably underpowered on the petrol version.
Had a spin in an e200 and it's a nice ride, albeit for about 15 mins in an urban setting.
Are there any specific warning signs or problems at certain mileages I should look out for?
    Thanks

Timing chains stretching is the most common problem on the Merc 1.8 Kompressor engine. Not sure if they sorted the problem by a particular year or what as I'm not too knowledgeable on Mercs.

saw the below earlier OP, if you are paying 2.5L tax on the cc system, to hell with the 523 IMO, get the 525, puts out 218bhp v the 177bhp of the 523.

on the E60 5 series petrols, there is only the 2.5 (523 and 525) or 3L (530) engine between 05 and 07... Only thing is 300-400km, would be E50-60 at the pumps I reckon...

I'm a BMW fan but the E200k is a great car, should be a fair bit more reliable than the E60 too.
