Work in as was said above - manners must be declining as back when I was in UCD there was never an issue with working in or helping others out.

Manners and the ability to discuss things in person with other human beings is declining in direct correlation to the increase in internet usage these days.

Floor press is a legitimate exercise for which you need a power rack, there was no idiocy involved.

OP you should have asked if you could work in , if he was doing floor press you could have done squats in between.

    Sad but true.

Strongman training out the back from me soon!

I was always glad when someone wanted to work in - a little bit of extra rest between sets! :D

10-15mins should be the limit for hogging a machine or power cage etc.

    Says who?

The one thing that does my head in is people that use two machines at once, leaving their towel on one of them so you're just like hmmm someones using it like just do all your sets on one machine then move to the other!!

squats have always priority , they can do floor press with dumbbells instead and let people squat

Where in the rule book is this that squats always have a priority?

In a squat rack yes but in a power cage? No.

Whys that? Surely we could be more flexible by interacting with each other, discussing it like grown ups and just not being dicks about it.

rules in the gym I go ( sometimes ) to are clear, squats have priority in a power cage... every gym is different that's all, you go where you like

    What about supersets?

There shouldn't be a problem with people using a particular piece of equipment for a while unless they refuse to let you work in.

I don't really see how working in is feasible if both parties are lifting drastically different amounts. I usually only lift small weights because I'm not that strong, and the guys that would often hog the machine would be lifting fairly heavy weights. I would think swapping them out between sets along with adjusting the height thingy and doing a set would take longer than most peoples rest period, I could be totally wrong tho.

Why would you need a rack for that though?
What else are you going to unrack th bar from?
The powercage is the only place I'd consider suitable for heavy floor presses.

It's a perfectly legitimate exercise. The OP clearly didn't realise that. Nobody's fault. The 10 more sets, was unusual alright.

    Why should squats have priorty?
Fair enough if it was curls or similar. But squats aren't the only lift that has a legitimate use for the cage.

You can do squat variations without a cage/rack too.

    Work in. Problem solved.

If he gets the huff, **** him.
If he doesn't, he is a sound man, and you've made a new gym friend to ask for a spot when you need.

If they're lifting heavy weights, relative to them in any case, then their rest will be for a couple of minutes anyway. Two people can strip/load a bar pretty quickly.

I'll give that a go so next time it happens.

How do you handle equipment hogs at the gym?

I was at the gym last night and I couldn't get a look in at the squat rack because some gob****e decided he needed it to do bench presses on the floor in the middle of the rack!

2 perfectly good bench presses a few feet away, but no, the squat rack is the only appropriate place this guy could do his business.

I did all my other bits and pieces and waited around for a bit for him to finish (he had been at it about a half an hour at this point), he noticed me waiting so he pointed out that he has 10 more sets to do and would likely be there till close which was half an hour away. So I just went home and skipped my squats, which was pretty irritating as I don't have as much time to go to the gym as I'd like.

I'm not very confrontational so I don't think I would ever call someone out on acting the eejit like that, mostly because it's not his fault the gym is short on equipment. When I told my boyfriend about it when I got home tho he thought I was stupid for not telling him to GTFO.

This happens me all the time in this gym, all manner of people doing stupid things in the squat rack (curls, dead lifts), all things that just need the bar and not the actual squat rack so could be done pretty much anywhere else in the gym. More often than not I have to skip squats. I definitely won't be renewing my membership when it runs out, it wasn't cheap so they really should have better equipment. I have it for another 6 months tho so I'll have to put up with this for a while longer.

So how do you guys deal with this type of thing? Am I just a push over, or do these people have a right to use this equipment in whatever way they want for as long as they like?

i feel your pain. to combat this I go at 0630 and have the freedom of the whole gym. takes you about 3 weeks to get into the swing of it but best thing i have done

Devils advocate re: compalin to gym - oppo to say well we do a range of weight training classes or PT sessions where we focus on your unique goals and have all the equipment all for the tiny price of................

    just saying ha ha

People can Goblet Squat and Hack Squat without the use of the Power Cage , DB Floor Press is a different exercise to a barbell press. Most gyms dont have 50+Kg DB's anyway.

Not just those - I've done regular squats without a cage loads of times.

yeah , but if you squat 200kg+ then the cage would be beneficial;-)

Well holy god, if I was benching a heavy load I imagine a cage would be pretty beneficial. Imagine dropping 200kg on your chest.

Not many people do 200kg bp, but more ppl do 200kg squats. Cage chest press is not about the weight ( wait for it some people will say it is haha), so they can go and do it with the dumbells and giver priority to the guys who want to squat, thank feck I go to proper gyms with no idiots:D
