Bespoke doors for Ikea kitchen

We're probably going to order an Ikea kitchen for our refurb.

There's a slightly low bulkhead meaning our 200cm tall unit won't fit, and we're assuming cutting Ikea doors isn't an option.

We want a plywood kitchen worktop anyway (lines showing on the edge, formica on top) and now we think the unit which won't fit is an opportunity to get doors/faces made for the whole kitchen.

I want to know how easy/difficult affordable/expensive this would be, bearing in mind we hope to be saving money by getting and fitting all the units.

    It's this kind of style:

I would think you could cut the top of the Ikea door tidily enough. You can put something on the bare edge, but it won't be that visible or noticeable.

If you want to make custom doors, you can, for sure. It will be expensive and require a good bit of research to get the quality of finish that really makes the kitchen shown above special. But certainly can be done.

Have a look at http://www.semihandmadedoors.com for an idea what's possible. (See http://www.houzz.com/discussions/937546/UK-alternative-to-Semihandmade-for-Ikea-kitchen for short discussion

Hi, just came across this and wondered if you got anywhere? Thinking of doing something similar and need to decide....

When I look at the cupboard doors on the photo (the island) I think of the tomato sauce I splattered accidentally all over my kitchen recently, but I was able to wipe it off the kitchen units easily...

Is this plywood unvarnished? It looks like a very temporary kitchen to me...

The doors in the picture are birch plywood, probably the strongest wood panel material available, finished with cellulose lacquer or a water based polyurethane, neither of which will darken the wood, definitely not a temporary job.

The doors are beautiful. Is there anywhere in Ireland that one could buy bespoke doors for Ikea carcass? Anywhere I've found are in US or mainland Europe....

There's a few places where you can buy replacement kitchen doors online. It's only going to get difficult if you want to match an existing Ikea door.

No, I don't need to match, but I like the natural birch ply look and thought I might mix with white Ikea. Just can't find anywhere in Ireland that do doors without wanting to sell me whole kitchen

    Hi Joden,

I’m currently doing this for my own kitchen (buying ikea carcasses and hinges and making up plywood and Formica faced plywood doors, counter etc.).

I’m an architect and have worked with a product designer/furniture maker to design the doors, handles, source the materials and figure out the process.

If you are interested, I could give you a quote for doing the same for your kitchen.

My own one will be done in a few weeks if you wanted to check it out.

If it's plain Baltic birch plywood you could get the 8x4 sheets and have them cut. We make framed kitchens with birch plywood carcasses.

I got doors from this place https://www.kitchendoorworkshop.co.uk

We got the cheapest as they were for the utility room. Quality was excellent and were easy to fit. The do standard sizes off the shelf, but will do bespoke too.

    Hi!

Will be putting a kitchen into the house we are renovating over the next few months and would ideally like birch ply doors on IKEA frames as you have done/are doing. Seems as if Plykea are the best option but no idea as to how much they will cost to ship and with 'The B Word' around the corner in March it could turn into a nightmare having them shipped over.

Would love to see how your own kitchen turned out, feel free to send me a DM.
