My wife has been called to a registration appointment for a Public Services Card. She was unemployed about 6 years ago for a few weeks but thankfully has been in full time employment since.

Does she need to attend this appointment?

You have to get it. Friend was told to reassure the time off work and be there as they "couldn't accommodate everyone who needed to be somewhere else".

You can also go in before the appointment when it's quieter. The whole process takes about ten mins. You could call the office and ask them what time of the day is quietest. That way your wife won't miss much time off work.

I did this and went in when there was no waiting time and got it sorted:)

It depends on how many are called to get it. It only takes about 5-10mins for each person but if there's loads ahead of you it'll take awhile

The government want your wife to have a PSC so that when (its when, not if) she needs to avail of a public service, she will be ID ready so to speak.
If she's very very busy and can't ho on the day she has been invited, then she should ring them and arrange to go at a better time for her.
Alternstibly, she won't be arrested or anything if she doesn't show up, but wouldn't be in a position to complain if she needs SW again soon but finds her claim held up because she didn't turn up for her appointment.
