In the process of installing a solid fuel stove in my brothers new house and we decided on a slate type 12x12 tile to make the hart . I'm just wondering what will I seal these slate tiles with before I get around to grouting ? As I've read that sealing is essential with these?

Slate is porous so it will stain if the grout gets on top... I think. We put in a slate hart last year, I just oiled it first which created a seal and gives it a nice finish.

I made up a hearth with slate tiles years ago and sealed it with HG Golv polish, worked fine but will wear over time (easy to refinish anyway).

If you used oil or varnish type sealers this will tend to yeloow over time as they oxidise so I think the acrylic based Golv polish is a better job.
