Switching GP

I have been having problems with the GP I have attended for many years (there is a lack of female GPs, I've had too many incorrect diagnosis', and the GP is not the best at dealing with people). Anyway long story short I want to switch GP.

How does one go about doing this? I previously tried to switch to the other GP in my town and was told they have a policy of not allowing patients switch between the two GPs. As a result of this I don't actually know where I want to switch to.

Do I have to formally have my file moved or can I try out a few different GPs and then make my mind up.

    I am a private patient.

If two people in the same business in the same town (especially if they're the only two people in that business in that town) have an agreed policy between them of "If you don't poach my customers, I won't poach yours.", than that to me is prima facie evidence of cartel-like behaviour and perhaps it should be reported to the Competition Authority for investigation.

Oh it's most certainly cartel behaviour but I can't prove that. I presume it operates as a type of Gentlemen's agreement.

You don't need to prove it, that's the CA's job.

I would report this to the Competition Authority regardless - there isn't going to be any harder proof that an individual can obtain other than what you've been told. If its not reported it can't be addressed and realistically, I'd imagine the fright of the CA turning up on their door will ensure it doesn't continue.

If you're private, there should be little issue in going to a few GPs although some may ask you to move your files. There's no actual requirement to, beyond a practice asking you to, but for sanity reasons you actually should.

Is it not a patients right to choose whatever Doctor they wish? I know when you have a Medical Card it's more difficult but as a private patient I would have thought it is your right to move if you wish.
In relation to your files you would have to sign a form for your current GP to release them to you.
