Going back to Eircom for upload speed?

    Hello,

I am in the Adare area, co. Limerick (not the town of Adare). I do not have BBnet coverage or at least had none in 2010, so I am on ADSL. (I now see Permanet also claims coverage here but am not sure I should go that route, as I don't know if I might have to move - not a problem with a DSL contract as you can take it with you).

Since 2010, when I moved into this house, I got Eircom broadband at 2M down, 256 k up. This was somewhat painful as my work depends on "up" as well as "down".

In 2013 I went over to Sky Broadband who moved me to 4 M down, 384 K up on the router stats page. Real speed is a bit over 3M down, around 300k up.

I am now out of contract. And Eircom are saying that since last year they rolled out Next Generation Broadband here (not fibre). They say they'd be able to give 5 M down and "up to 1 M, and certainly way more than your current speed" up.

Should I trust them? They were generally reliable back when I used them, but I am reading recent negative reviews. And will they really give this sort of boost to upload speed? I thought that with 4M down it woul dnot be possible to go much further up than 384k?

The 8Mbps BMB (NGB not NGA) product is 8Mbps down and 512Kbps up (assuming your line is only capable of 8Mbps or less) and both download and upload speed drop significantly with distance on ADSL2+

If you are getting about 4-5Mbps with Sky then chances are that's about all you will get with any provider.

If you call any provider or use the online line checker, they will give you an idea of what you can get but you wont be getting much more than you have today unless there has been a serious change in your line.

ADSL is totally distance dependant from the exchange.
