Couldn't see anything on this yet.. but watched this tonight in the cinema, and absolutely loved it!

Just the right length of 90 minutes (you hearing me Apatow?!) and a healthy supply of belly laughs. It's not gonna change the world and don't go if juvenile humour isn't your thing, but it's just a damn fun film and the last half hour in particular has plenty of great physical humour.

Definitely a real crowd-pleaser with the primary cast of Rogen, Byrne, Efron and Franco (not THAT Franco.. his brother Dave) giving their all - and some fantastic support from the likes of Ike Barinholtz as well... great to see him in something else after consistently stealing the show in The Mindy Project.

Plus lots of cameos from familiar faces including
    The Lonely Island
    , the cast of
    Workaholics
    , New Girl's
    Jake Johnson
and even a quite substantial role for the excellent Craig Roberts (who people may know from Richard Ayoade's 'Submarine').

I enjoyed it but there were definite flaws. Some of the improvised comedy tended to result in just people screaming at each other, I also saw one reviewer point out that they seemed to go out of there way to set up a bond between Rogen and Efron's character which was then forgotten.

The best line of the film for me was "Well, my parents love each other and I think it's hilarious". I also really enjoyed Craig Roberts.

Saw this on Sunday, I will admit, I laughed a lot.

Has some serious plot holes, weak acting at parts, but it is simply a leave your brain at the door, sit back, relax and enjoy kind of film.

His line "I wasn't sleeping!" could have been my favourite line of the movie..

It was bit of an anti-climax in this regard. It felt like it was building towards Rogen and Efron teaming up for a common goal of some capacity in a dinger of a final act. It didn't.

It was funny, but not as funny as I thought it was going to be given some of the reviews.

I'm kinda glad it didn't.. that whole notion of two characters at loggerheads for the majority of a movie's duration suddenly working with each other towards a mutually beneficial goal has been done to death already!

Agreed. But all storylines have been done to death. Given the chemistry between the two, I think it could've worked. As mentioned, there was definite set up of their relationship which seemed to be abandoned. The last third felt quite flat compared to the rest. i.e. no real goal. At least no real goal I was invested in.

I thought the walkie-talkies might have played a role at some point

I guess if penis humour is your thing you'll love this movie. So contrived just horrible I thought. Maybe you need to be drunk before watching it, or maybe Im gone too cynical, but this was up there with the biggest wastes of time I can remember in a movie. Rose Byrne deserves the Razzle for what was one of the most forced fake performances I can remember seeing. The odd funny moment but overall I wished I'd turned it off earlier.

There was a few laughs. Good chemistry. An enjoyable watch.

It wasn't a bad movie. A bad movie is 'Sabotage'. Check out that hunk of piss and we'll have a proper barometer for what a bad movie is.

i hate when people say that. been preparing for this movie for 6 months(srs) did deliver, also agreed on the line where zac says 'well my parents love each other and i think its hilarious' also the bit where he went to the jobsfair was kinda funny just because his gpa reminded me of me.

The film where the baby puts a used condom into it's mouth for laughs, yeah i think i'll give it a miss.

It is what it is. If you like Seth Rogen, go see it and you won't be disappointed. If you don't and read this before you've seen it, don't moan about it. It's Seth Rogen being Seth Rogen and the rest of the cast hold their own.

Like you said OP, it won't change the world but there were laughs to be had. I got what I paid for.

Seen it yesterday and I liked it. You can gauge from the trailer its going to be a college comedy with lashings of gross out physical comedy and that is exactly what it is. It didn't brake any boundaries but its good at what it does. Zac, Seth and Dave Franco all gave good performances I felt.

I wouldn't put anyone off seeing it. An enjoyable ride and a couple of laugh out moments are whats in store. FWIW I thought the soundtrack was great too but maybe I'm just showing my personal preferences there.

    So you downloaded it?

Well, I thought it was okay but then I did see it in a packed screen and I think that really adds to these type of films. Comedies like these, I feel are almost like the scare films like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer etc.. in that you really do get more out of watching them if watched in as close to a packed cinema as possible. Watching them alone and I feel you are missing out on a large part of what these films are about.

Watching them as a download just makes the element all the more absent and I don't think I have enjoyed it at all had I done that.

All just personal opinion but I just think certain films need to be seen a certain way to get maximum enjoyment from them.

If Seth Rogen is involved, then the word you are looking for is either "high" or "stoned".

Thought it was a bit of a let down to be honest. I agree with the Rose Byrne Razzie nomination comment, she was just trying to force it way too much. Rogen does the throw away one liners really well but when he's on script writing duty his stories tend to be a bit vacant and go nowhere. Zac Efron was good I thought, he got the balance between hatred and sympathy just right, but overall there were just too many limp moments where the jokes fell flat. I think the best comedies are the ones that have a strong story and performances where the comedy is secondary to the plot.

Top notch analysis of a scene presumably from the trailer and therefore completely out of context ;)

I plead the fifth on incriminating myself. But I'd agree with you. Should of had a few drinks before watching it too.

Didn't mind it. Efron has a ridiculous body, was hard to keep my eyes off of it on any scenes where he was topless.

The milking scene wasn't very nice though (that wasn't a nice sight)

Breaking boundaries might be pushing it but its very rare to see a character like Rose Bynres in a college/gross out comedy. 99% of time she'd be the uptight wife trying to stamp all over the giant man childs reckless behaviour.

It's also rare to see a college comedy from the viewpoint of those entering parenthood.

With a few bolder choices I think this movie could have been something special. It kinds of sits on the fence a little bit too much for my liking but at least it attempted a few things that aren't the norm.

The funniest bits were in the 2 trailers, so there weren't too many surprises.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,182 ✭✭✭nyarlothothep

This film was amazing! I love Seth Rogen, this guy can do no wrong! Him, James Franco, Danny Mc Bride and Jonah Hill make the funniest comedies ever. I thought I wasn't going to enjoy this film, that Rogen had finally made a mistake because it would be a sentimental comedy but it wasn't like that at all. Best scene was the fight scene involving balls, I laughed out loud at that. In this respect it reminded me a little of The Dictator in that it reaches its apex so to speak with that particular scene but unlike The Dictator it continues to deliver. And Mc Lovin' is in it. I can't wait for 22 Jump Street.

In fact, some of the trailer bits look funnier that didn't seem to make the movie.

Saying 'who has that been inside' about the dildo after a pause and the toilet dropping through the floor - both of which seem not to have been in the final edit.

Anyway notice how two back to back scenes seem to have been wrongly positioned?

Maybe I am missing something, but right after the third airbag goes off and he lands on the floor in the house, he shouts: "One left" and then in the next scene we see him looking for it with a bat and poking stuff and he finds it, but then it cuts to another scene and he is looking for it again and pokes the crib. Surely the crib scene should have preceded him finding the last airbag, otherwise why would he still be looking for it.

Maybe I'm looking to deeply into it. There is that possibility :p

I thought that too but I think that scene was more because his Mrs had just left with the baby and he was looking at the crib..and just for comedic sake he double-checked it with the bat to make sure there was nothing in it..thats just what I thought anyway!

Just a little thing from the film that I don't think is getting talked about enough. Its nothing to do with the plot but I'll spoiler it anyway.
When one of the white characters from the film used the N-word when doing a Barack Obama impression and when rapping that Outkast song. Now I know this isn't the first time that this has happened but to me it is in a film this mainstream and with this sort of ungritty subject matter it seemed out of place.

Just seems to me with the whole Jeremy Clarkson controversy lately it was kinda shocking in a way to hear it when one white character was speaking to another. Maybe the tide is turning on the word but I can't see how black audiences would feel hearing it being thrown around so easily.

That jarred me too. It's interesting, though, I imagine they did it to push buttons. Let's not beat around the bush: white people do say it when quoting rap songs and so on in the real world, not meant disparagingly. It's almost as if we've come so far that it now means something else...though what that is, I don't know yet.

Has the word and our tolerance for it evolved enough to acknowledge that in public? Or are we a generation away from that? I'm not sure, but the bit got a laugh from me at least. It was interesting and ballsy to see them ask that question though.

To be fair, I can't really think of any context that would make it funny.

Althoug it is played for laughs to some degree, the reaction of the parents, also the innocence and complete non reaction of the child in comparison (I'm not doing it justice but it actually is quite funny), the main point of that scene to highlight how bad the situation has got with having a fraternity living next door. It's a tipping point for the parents who realise that loud music isn't the only thing they'll have to contend with.

Coming out of Godzilla last night and crowd was streaming out from seeing this at the same time and heard a girl say to her boyfriend:

"It was okay but you think they would have hired a baby sitter when they were going out all the time".

She had a point in fairness :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,835 ✭✭✭✭cloud493

They did didn't they? After the first time anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭Mackman

They had the baby monitor which worked because they were just next door.

Just saw this last night, really enjoyed it. Laughed from start to finish. One of Rogans better movies I thought. Having a young first child, I thought they captured the transition from the young party couple to having a family really well.

Same with most comedies of this sort, if you look for mistakes you're going to find them.

    Solid 8/10 for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 774 ✭✭✭stealinhorses

It was funny enough, but slowed down a lot at times. Zac Efron and Dave Franco were great. Some scenes were completely stupid (milking, penis casting) and could have been handled differently, but for the most part I enjoyed it, 6/10.

Probably my favourite scene from the film, Samuel Jackson speech gets me everytime and Dave Franco has Robert De Niro to a tee
