If you're not puncturing or sliding off I'd keep going.

Lifespan depends on brands, compounds, type of use etc

What kind of tyres do you have currently? What do they look like? Many gashes?

Very hard to know to be honest, but again there's no harm ordering a set of tyres and having them ready to go when you get to the end of the the existing ones.

What are you doing? Commuting? Racing? Travelling on rough roads? etc.

There are plenty of options, all suiting different needs.

Specialized are/were doing a tyre amnesty. Not sure if its still going. Got a set of 23 Armadillo Eilte's plus a set of tubes for a lot less than RRP in my LBS with a trade in of an old set of any tires. The new Armadillo's roll better than the last generation plus I'd only one puncture from my last set due to a screw after 5k+

wiggle have a great sale on at the moment. i'm about to order 2 schwalbe lugano and a set of shimano m520 for total of 50 euros with free delivery. cheapest i could find just 2 schwalbe lugano in dublin was 40 euros

I got 4000s from bike components . De fir 23 euro or something like that. I've 4000k on my current set of 4000s and they are still looking good for another season.
Just put 4seasons 28s on my single speed and it's huge the increased pleasure to ride it after 23 gators

4 seasons seem as grippy as 4000s so far. I do not reccomend gators at all except in that you won't need new tires for a few years and will get a flat maybe once every 18months

I change my tyres with the clocks. Put new tyres on end of October and end of March. This means I get 5 months out of the tyres over the winter when the weather and roads are bad and 7 months over summer when roads are good.

    I do about 200km a week commuting.

I have gone up to 3 years without a puncture using this regime..

I change tubes once a year and wheels about every 2 years

I hate to say it but that seems like shocking value. I have had 2 pairs of 4000s that have been flipped back and forth and they have done me well for 3 years on about the same distance per week. I have to get new fronts soon but there should still be a summer out of them without major issues.

I change my tyres with the season too, though the ones I take off would be fine to put back on again once the roads get better.

I bought a set of schwelbe luganos there about 3 months ago however for a bit of a change and it was probably the worst investment I ever made, worn down after two months or so.When it comes to tyres, for the amount they pay back I wouldnt skrimp on the original outlay

I'm always envious of those who get so long out of a pair of tyres. I rarely puncture in the conventional sense but (with the exception of Marathons) I've never worn out a tyre normally. I usually suffer some sort of catastrophic damage usually to the side wall long before it becomes worn. A lot of travel in winter after dark doesn't help I suppose.

you are probably correct but I would prefer to pay a bit more for a bit less chance of punctures. I do give the used tyres away to a couple of friends who wouldn't be doing high mileage so they continue to be used. Personally I wouldn't be sure when a tyre is worn. If I start getting punctures then you could assume its worn but by then its too late..

In 8 years commuting on my present system I would have had less than 5 punctures so for me it works.

for leisure cycling I would probably just keep using the same set but when you need to be somewhere on time you don't want any delays..

Fair point, when mine get worn, you know within 24 hours, the punctures go from one a year to one every commute. I always have a spare set in the shed but that not much good when you are on the road. I always carry some sort of insulating tape or a boot to cover me if it happens unexpectedly.
you need to be somewhere on time you don't want any delays..
TBF, if I had the dough, I would probably do something similar, maybe a fresh pair at the beginning of spring/summer.

I usually get a year - 8,000km - from rubinios. I went for two years without a problem until the puncture gods remembered me and I've had two in the first 500knm of a new set (to be fair it was a three inch nail). I generally change them when I feel the grip is not as good.

It's been done to death here but many of us experience very poor grip in the wet with Gatorskins.
