    No real experience with the Jeep Cherokee.

    If you want a crossover vehicle think about getting a Subaru Forester. Nicer to drive, plenty of space (seats food flat very easily, is an estate, capable off road with its AWD system and higher ground clearance than regular cars, low(er) range gearbox on them as well (non turbo versions), comfortable, reliable and safe.
