Problems with wired internet connection.

    Wonder can anyone help.
I have my router in my home and have an Ethernet cable running from one of it's lan ports to a PC in a workshop about 50 to 60 yards away.

Works fine for a while but will eventually disconnect all devices using the router, wired or wireless. After a while it will connect again but then disconnect.
Hopefully there is enough info there for a diagnosis and thanks in advance for any help.

Have you checked the cable for damage or water penetration?

Are you on DSL?(Broadband over a phone line). If so have your ISP check that the internet connection itself is stable.

Checked the full length of cable for a break and can't see anything. Yes, on DSL and never had a problem with the connection. But will check with ISP.

If you leave the cable to the shed disconnected everything works ok?

If so run a temporary new cable from the modem, if it drops with the new cable, check electrics in the shed.

    A shed??? Excuse me...it's a workshop/studio! :):)
Seriously the workshop has certified wiring, recently intalled and signed off.

I got somebody to crimp the connectors onto the cable, could there be something wrong there or if something was dodgy would it just not work at all?

Have you tried a different device e.g. a laptop to rule out any possible problems with the network adapter on the PC.

It could be a crimping problem but if it is badly crimped it wouldn't normally work at all.

No, actually, I haven't tried that. PC's are still running XP because the machines they are running don't have updated software.
Will give it a go on a Windows 7 laptop.

Just to finish thread, it turned out to be one of the connectors was badly crimped. Re-did it and all seems to be fine.
    Many thanks for the help!
