Does anybody have the lowdown on this?

Referring to "private sellers" on donedeal with 8cars for sale

Are these cars any riskier than buying off of a private seller? I am taking about cars that have genuine nct and service history etc and look a million dollars

Is there any reason to a avoid these cars? Are they dodgy. Are they actually dealers or dell boy? Anyway to know?

They are normally a bit cheaper than what you would expect.

Someone selling a few cars on the side? Not much wrong with it.

Judge the car on its condition and history and work from there. Just don't expect any come back of something goes wrong.

Just be aware that if they are selling them as private seller then you the buyer are not covered by the sale of goods act in the event the car has an issue. The same rule of buyer beware applies in this case. I have no problem with this as long as the car is priced similarly to other cars being sold by private individuals.

Unfortunately there are a lot of chancers out there passing off as private sellers trying to flog dodgy cars on the likes of donedeal for a number of reasons, one being that they know they are not suitable to be sold on a forecourt and don't want to warranty them and another reason is to sell them off the books or under the nose of revenue.

As with anything you need to carry out due diligence on any car before buying including on who is selling it. The internet is very good for this type of thing. If something looks too good or cheap to be true then chances are there is a reason why it is.

Your full rights apply if you can show they are a dealer and clearly selling 8 cars at a time they are.

I'd run a mile myself, you would have all the disadvantages and none of the advantages of a genuine dealer.

Smacks of income tax avoidance/evasion too.

Treat it as a private sale, assume you have little to no legal comeback, get the car fully assessed by a professional and make sure you are paying private sale prices and there should be no issue.

And if you have proof that the seller is a part time dealer (ie if you can screengrab several ads from DoneDeal etc) then do so, as it will help if you do need to take legal action against them for any reason (depending on the amount of cars they are selling they may be classed as a dealer and as such the sale of goods act may apply).

With the way most Irish treat their cars, regardless of whether the owner was a genuine private seller, I'd only ever buy privately if the car was only worth up to a grand or two (my own "could live with it if I had to write it off" figure), or if I knew the seller/history of the car.

Anything else I'd want a full dealer warranty - especially with modern cars and their potential issues (clogged filters from not being driven properly, complicated electrics, timing chain/injector issues etc)

Sure, dealer shopping will cost a bit more, but I see cars going on DoneDeal for 20/30k and I genuinely wonder at the buyer who's gonna spend that sort of money with no comeback if something falls off it on the way home or something!

one piece i was given before is:

ask the seller to tell you about THE car they have advertisted.

if the reply is WHICH car then you car be fairly certain it isnt a private sale
