Quick question: As a self builder finished goods such as stairs, kitchen and sanitary ware are all at 23% VAT. If I had a builder, would it be 23% or 13.5% on these goods or is it that these would be supplied by the customer and the builder would fit. Thanks

you would pay 13.5% for the "service" of buying and fitting the item. Building services are 13.5 - but if you buy product its 23%

Cheers, it wasn't too clear to me on a self build if my plumber would buy the goods we picked since he's fitting them.

its all about the relationship you have with each trade - our main contractor bought most of the stuff and the trades fitted it

Hard to see how the self builder (only self to blame) actually saves money.

Do what you can yourself, shop around and haggle. Nobody will look after your money better than you.

Mod Note: Please refrain from suggesting paying cash...it is illegal not to pay the relevant VAT/taxes.
