Your options are, all leaving from O'Connell Street:

    - Dublin Bus services 16/41 - By far the Cheapest (2.50 by leap, 3.05 by cash) but also the slowest, exact fare by coins only if paying by cash but stops at many places on the way and limited space for luggage. Runs about every 15 mins.

    - Dublin Bus 747 - €6 single or €10 return. Buy on board, change given and notes accepted. Luggage rack available downstairs, Wifi on-board, stops very little between O'Connell Street (outside Dublin Bus HQ). Runs every 15-20 minutes and uses port tunnel.

    - Aircoach 700 - €7 single or €12 return on board in cash (notes accepted), €6 single or €11 return when booked online with Wifi onboard. Most comfortable, but slightly more expensive than airlink. Luggage space under bus and one stop between O'Connell Street and Dublin Airport. Runs every 15-20 minutes.

    Great info,
how many minutes to reach airport approx by bus no. 16?

At that time of day, unless you've half the evening to spare, I'd be opting for hte 747 or the Aircoach. 747 uses the port tunnel and will be out there in about half an hour or less.
(Aircoach might use it as well, I'm not sure as I only ever use 747!)

Aircoach doesn't use the Port Tunnel, but the time it takes seems to be roughly the same as the 747, since the 747 takes a bit of a winding route between O'Connell Street with seven stops and the Port Tunnel whereas the Aircoach, whilst operating via Drumcondra, is pretty direct with just one stop between O'Connell Street and the airport so there is very little in it.

If there are a few people traveling it's usually cheaper and more convenient to get a taxi.

But hopefully not from the rank outside the Gresham which is run by bully boys and thugs.

41 leaves from Abbey St., and does not go down O'Connell St.

Years back I used to walk through the middle of that rank 2-3 times a week on the way to music lessons. For three whole years of walking the route the only black driver I ever seen on that rank had just pulled up and all the taxi drivers started abusing him and telli g him to fcuk off. It was disgusting to witness and I've never taken a taxi from that rank since.

One day some group of black taxi drivers are going to outflank these racists and rig their cars with some well placed CCTV and audio recording, pull up to that rank and wait for the inevitable abuse and let the lads have enough rope to hang themselves. I can't wait for that day to come; sooner or later one of their many victims is going to get their own back by recording many instances of their behaviour based on skin colour and then feed it to the Gardai, media and Taxi Regulator. Hopefully it will put a few of these bullies off the road.

You only ever hear one side of the so called "racist" issue.
There have been numerous instances where non Irish drivers have racially abused Irish drivers, yet you never hear people jump up and down about it.
As for the Gresham there are a number of black drivers who work it, and a number of east European drivers who work the Gresham.

    Back to the OP question.
IF there are 2 or more of you a taxi works out cheaper than the bus and will get you there quicker

I'm the poster who brought up the issue about this rank and I never mentioned racism, simply that it was run by bullyboys and thugs. Isn't it true that there are self-appointed people effectively in charge at this rank and that taxi drivers who aren't members of the cosy club get short shrift i.e. i.e are told to p1ss off?

I accept your point that it isn't necessarily down to the colour of your skin though as a large number of the new licences since deregulation went to immigrants, it's easy for the casual observer to come to the conclusion that there is some racial discrimination involved.

back on topic, if you intend going to the airport with luggage then the 16 and 41 may not let you on if theres no space for your bags - which is more than possible come O Connell st.

Perhaps you should refrain from making "conclusions" without facts

An RTE program which showed a big guy with a beer belly clearly running the show, message was that it was a closed shop, no newbies welcome.

Facts you want? - what about the green light brigade who wanted to advertise the fact that the driver was Irish - was that not blatant racism in action? Bit of a PR disaster for the taxi 'industry' - or did I make that up as well?

The 41 from Abbey Street is ok actually, I get it once every couple of weeks around 6pm to the airport. It takes about 40 minutes usually. You should be ok with bags as it's the first stop for that route as opposed to the 16. There's one at 17:50 and one at 18:10 if you're looking for one around 6pm.

    Great information guys.
I will have only 1 handbag only so luggage is not a problem.
    I will take bus 41.
Thanks everyone. I know where to go tomorrow and start my holidays 😊

I would never use that rank for the reasons that have been described, the way you have several guys in the middle of either side of it barking out orders and telling drivers what they have to do like they are some kind of rank manager and telling cars which ones can and can't come in and in bark out orders.

Three passengers actually to come close and only then when you are taking Aircoach or Airlink, or are taxis doing €12 fares to the airport now from the cit centre? I thought it was €20?

So RTE ran a full programme showing a "big guy with a beer belly " running the show ? Really? I mean really?
So from that YOU took that it was a closed shop, brilliant!
What usually happens on that rank is that the first car away isn't always the one at the top of the rank (i.e. facing the Ambassador Cinema).
So if a customer comes along one of the drivers usually will tell them which car is next.

The same happens when a taxi arrives to get on the rank.
Again someone more than likely will shout across to tell them which car he is to follow.
That may not be necessarily the one at the end of the rank as the "last car" could be on the other side of the rank.

    So that's what happens.
But then again RTE did a full programme on a "big guy with a beer belly " running the show !!!

    Ah the "green light brigade".
That sensationalist "story" was by a "journalist" from a internet news site who made the claim.
What she failed to highlight was that numerous "non Irish " drivers had this lights as well on their cars ,which blew her story out of the water .

I personally know of 5 non Irish drivers who had them (2 Africian (Nigerian and Ugandan) 2 Polish 1 Moldovan drivers)

Minister Varadkar called those (who used the green lights ) racist ,yet when it was pointed out to him the REAL reason for the lights and the facts that non Irish drivers used them he never responded .

The REAL reason for the lights was because, in daylight it is hard for people to see if a taxi was available as the yellow light if on is not visible in daylight.

Many taxis in other European countries have this system (Spain,Italy,Portugal,to name three)

But some "journalist" decided it was a racist story

Two people from DA (with no heavy traffic) to Clerys is less than 20 euro

Sorry but if Taxi drivers were using the rank properly/legally there would be no need to inform anyone who was the next Taxi or last Taxi, the rank isn't supposed to be used for Taxi's having lunch breaks and they should never be left empty, they're only supposed to be there if they're for hire.

Sorry, but your first claim was that if there are two or more passengers a taxi will be cheaper, which is simply incorrect and downright misleading, not that a taxi driver would ever try and mislead someone who may take an airport bus of course!

It is not until you count the fares of 3 passengers on the Aircoach or Airlink that the taxi is close to the price of the bus, since both buses start at 6 euro or work out less still if you buy a return.

I'll say it again two or more people IS cheaper than the bus to the city centre (providing traffic is moving)
    I wouldn't say it if it wasn't so .

Your comment makes no sense whatsoever and is quite frankly one based on ignorance of how ranks work.

In my previous post I explain how the Gresham rank works and the same applies to the fosters.

As for your comment re lunch breaks , ect that doesn't even warrant a reply .

Anyway this thread has gone waaay off topic to what the OP asked.

And I'm telling you you are making it up to mislead members of the public which does your profession absolutely zero favours.

If it is can you tell me where I can get a taxi for less than €12 from so it is cheaper than the bus, since you seem to suggest that they are possible?

I think everyone on this forum would love to know where they could avail of such cute price taxis as they would like to avail of such bargains themselves.

Am I not right in thinking that customers can pick any taxi they like on a rank, and don't have to pick the "first" one?

So having someone directing you as to which car you should take is not only not necessary, but shouldn't be happening at all
