    James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said to him,
    "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." 
    He replied, "What do you wish me to do for you?" 
    They answered him, "Grant that in your glory
    we may sit one at your right and the other at your left." 
    Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. 
    Can you drink the cup that I drink
    or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" 
    They said to him, "We can." 
    Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink, you will drink,
    and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;
    but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give
    but is for those for whom it has been prepared." 
    When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. 
    Jesus summoned them and said to them,
    "You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles
    lord it over them,
    and their great ones make their authority over them felt. 
    But it shall not be so among you.
    Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant;
    whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. 
    For the Son of Man did not come to be served
    but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."

    R. Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

    John xviii. 33 - 37

    At that time, Pilate said to Jesus, Are You the King of the Jews? Jesusanswered, Do you say this of yourself, or have others told you of Me?Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own people and the chief priestshave delivered You to me. What have You done? Jesus answered, Mykingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, Myfollowers would certainly have fought that I might not be deliveredto the Jews. But, as it is, My kingdom is not from here. Pilatetherefore said to Him, You are then a King? Jesus answered, You sayit: I am a King. This is why I was born, and why I have come into theworld, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truthhears My voice.

    In his Encyclical of 11th December, 1925, H.H. Pius XI denounced the great modern heresy of laicism. It refuses to recognisethe rights of God and His Christ over persons and peoples and organises the lives of individuals, family, and of society itself, asthough God did not exist. This laicism ruins society, because in place of God and one’s neighbour, it substitutes pride and egoism. It begets jealousy between individuals, hatred between classes andr ivalry between nations.

    The world denies Christ because they ignore His royal perogatives. It must be instructed on this subject.

    The Word Incarnate is, by right, the King of the world but he has left to temporal kings the exercise of civil power; He kept, however, His spiritual royalty, to rule the mind and conscience of men by doctrine and faith.

    As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd,
    Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus,
    sat by the roadside begging.
    On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth,
    he began to cry out and say,
    "Jesus, son of David, have pity on me."
    And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. 
    But he kept calling out all the more,
    "Son of David, have pity on me."
    Jesus stopped and said, "Call him."
    So they called the blind man, saying to him,
    "Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you."
    He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. 
    Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?" 
    The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see." 
    Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you." 
    Immediately he received his sight
    and followed him on the way.

    The Gospel recounts one of the most impressive miracles of Jesus, thecalming of the storm. The Collect asks God to help us in the perilswe encounter during life.

    Today's Gospel is the last in the Epiphany cycle. Its main point is the divine power exercised by our Lord when he calmed the raging watersof the lake and in this way shows he was truly the Son of God. The chants of the Mass on this and the following Sundays, up to Septuagesima, are the same as the third Sunday. With the exception of the Communion Song, they express the main themes of Epiphany.

    with all your mind,
    and with all your strength.
    The second is this:
    You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
    There is no other commandment greater than these."
    The scribe said to him, "Well said, teacher.
    You are right in saying,
    'He is One and there is no other than he.'
    And 'to love him with all your heart,

    with all your strength,
    and to love your neighbor as yourself'
    is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."

Let both grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will say to the reapers: Gather up the weeds first, and bind them in bundles to burn; but gather thewheat into my barns.’

    They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext
    recite lengthy prayers. 
    They will receive a very severe condemnation."

    He sat down opposite the treasury
    and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. 
    Many rich people put in large sums.
    A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. 
    Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them,
    "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more
    than all the other contributors to the treasury. 
    For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth,
    but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had,
    her whole livelihood."

    At that time, Jesus spoke this parable to the crowds: The kingdom ofheaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed inhis field. His word, compared by Him to a tiny seed cast out into thef ield of the world (Gospel), and to a little leaven in the lump, isdivine because it calms our passions and brings forth in our hearts those marvels of faith, hope and charity of which we read in theEpistle.

    On the last Sunday of the liturgical year our thoughts are directed to the great truths of the ending of the world and the coming of Christin judgement. The Gospel describes the events that dread day. God hasg iven us redemption through the blood of Christ: if we call on Him, He will hear us and bring back from captivity. Therefore, if we would have the shelter of divine mercy at the end we must strive to cooperate with divine grace.

    This Sunday is now the beginning of the liturgical year. The station at StMary Major, one of the principal Roman basilicas and consecrated to Our Lady, shows the prominent place given to devotion to Our Ladythis season. The other parts of the Mass also allude to the coming of the Messias and are a preparation for it.

    Thename Advent is applied, in the Latin Church, to that period of the year, during which the Church requires the faithful to prepare for the celebration of the feast of Christmas, the anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ. The mystery of that day had every right to the honour of being prepared for by prayers and works of penance; and, in fact, it is impossible to state, with any certainty, when this season of preparation (which had been long observed before receiving its present name of Advent) was first instituted. It would seem, however, that its observance first begin in the west, since itis evident that Advent could not have been looked on as a preparation for the feast of Christmas, until that feast was fixed to the twenty-fifth of December; which was done in the east only towards the close of the fourth century; whereas it is certain that the Church of Rome kept the feast on that day at a much earlier period.

    The Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin was celebrated in the East on 9th December since the eight century, and in Ireland in May since the ninth century. The feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th spread in the West after the twelfth century; in 1476 it was approved for the Universal Church, and in 1854 the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception was defined asan article of revealed faith by Pius IX. The doctrine is summed up and contained in the Angel’s saluation which we read in the Gospel.

    This Sunday, known as Gaudete Sunday from the first word of the Introit is entirely given to joy, because as St Paul says in the Epistle: ‘theLord is nigh.’ The station as on all Sundays of Advent is at one ofthe chief Roman basilicas; today it is at that of St Peter, firstbuilt by Constantine over the tomb of the Saint.

    Exhorting them in many other ways, 
    he preached good news to the people.

And coming up at that very hour, she began to give praise to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. And when they had fulfilled all things as prescribed in the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, into their own town of Nazareth. And the Child grew and became strong. He was full of wisdom and the grace of God was upon Him.

    Today’s liturgy admirably complete the teaching of Christmas. The Son of God has come into the world to redeem us to make us sons of God(Epistle). He will be the sign of contradiction which shall be set free for the fall and resurrection of many in Israel (Gospel).

    but his parents did not know it.
    Thinking that he was in the caravan,
    they journeyed for a day
    and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances, 
    but not finding him,
    they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
    After three days they found him in the temple, 
    sitting in the midst of the teachers, 
    listening to them and asking them questions, 
    and all who heard him were astounded 
    at his understanding and his answers.
    When his parents saw him,

If there is no Sunday between the Circumcision and Epiphany, the Feast is to be celebrated on January 2nd.

    When Jesus was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. And after they had fulfilled the days, when they were returning, the Boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem, and His parents did not know it. But thinking that He was in the caravan, they had come a day’s journey before it occurred to them to look for Him among their relatives and acquaintances. And not finding Him, they returned to Jerusalem in search of Him. And it came to pass after three days, that they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who were listening to Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers. And when they saw Him, they were astonished. And His Mother said to Him, Son, why have You done so to us? Behold, in sorrow Your father and I have been seeking You. And He said to them, How is it that you sought Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business? And they did not understand the word that He spoke to them. And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them; and His Mother kept all these things carefully in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and grace before God and men.

    The Church proposes for our imitation the virtues of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in their hidden and lowly life at Nazareth, especially the humility of the Son of God, shown in His obedience to His mother andfoster father.

    Luke 3:15-16, 21-22

    The people were filled with expectation,
    and all were asking in their hearts
    whether John might be the Christ.
    John answered them all, saying, 
    “I am baptizing you with water,
    but one mightier than I is coming.
    I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals.
    He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

    After all the people had been baptized 
    and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, 
    heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him
    in bodily form like a dove. 
    And a voice came from heaven, 
    “You are my beloved Son;
    with you I am well pleased.”

    Lesson from the letter of St Paul the Apostle to the Romans

    Rom XII. 6-16

    Brethren: We have gifts differing according to the grace that has been given us, such as prophecy to be used according to the proportion of faith; or ministry, in ministering; or he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhorting; he who gives, in simplicity; he who presides, with carefulness; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without pretense. Hate what is evil, hold to what is good. Love one another with honor. Be not slothful in zeal; be fervent in spirit, serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope. Be patient in tribulation, persevering in prayer. Share the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Be of one mind towards one another. Do not set your mind on high things but condescend to the lowly.

Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them to the brim. And Jesus said to them, Draw out now, and take to the chief steward. And they took it to him. Now when the chief steward had tasted the water after it had become wine, not knowing whence it was - though the attendants who had drawn the water knew, - the chief steward called the bridegroom, and said to him, Every man at first sets forth the good wine, and when they have drunk freely, then that which is poorer. But you have kept the good wine until now. This first of His signs Jesus worked at Cana of Galilee; and He manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

    Our Lord at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee graciously worked themiracle of changing water into wine prompted by Mary, His mother.This establishes Mary, the mother of God, as our Mediatrix.

    John 2:1-11

    There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee,
    and the mother of Jesus was there.
    Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.
    When the wine ran short,
    the mother of Jesus said to him,
    “They have no wine.”
    And Jesus said to her,
    “Woman, how does your concern affect me?
    My hour has not yet come.”
    His mother said to the servers,
    “Do whatever he tells you.”
    Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings,
    each holding twenty to thirty gallons.
    Jesus told them,
    “Fill the jars with water.”
    So they filled them to the brim.
    Then he told them,
    “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.”
    So they took it. 
    And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine,
    without knowing where it came from
    — although the servers who had drawn the water knew —,
    the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him,
    “Everyone serves good wine first,
    and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one;
    but you have kept the good wine until now.”
    Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee
    and so revealed his glory,
    and his disciples began to believe in him.

    Thecenturion asked only one word of Jesus so that his servant could becured. Jesus’ word will likewise heal our souls if we approach Him with faith and humility.

    Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

    Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21

    Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events
    that have been fulfilled among us,
    just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning
    and ministers of the word have handed them down to us,
    I too have decided,
    after investigating everything accurately anew,
    to write it down in an orderly sequence for you,
    most excellent Theophilus,
    so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings
    you have received.

    Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit,
    and news of him spread throughout the whole region.
    He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.

    He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up,
    and went according to his custom
    into the synagogue on the sabbath day.
    He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.
    He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:
    The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
    to bring glad tidings to the poor.

    He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
    and recovery of sight to the blind,
    to let the oppressed go free,
    and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

    Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down,
    and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
    He said to them,
    "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."

Yes. He is coming, says the Lord of Hosts. But who will endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like the refiner's fire, or like the fuller's lye. He will sit refining and purifying silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi, refining them like gold or like silver that they may offer due sacrifice to the Lord. Then the sacrifice of Juda and Jerusalem will please the Lord, as in the days of old, as in years gone by, says the Lord almighty.

    At that time, when the days of Mary's purification were fulfilled according to the Law of Moses, they took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord - as it is written in the Law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord - and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons. And behold, there was in Jerusalem a man named Simeon, and this man was just and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. And he came by inspiration of the Spirit into the temple. And when His parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the Law, he also received Him into his arms and blessed God, saying, Now You dismiss Your servant, O Lord, according to Your word, in peace; because my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all peoples: a light of revelation to the Gentiles, and a glory for Your people Israel.

    From as early as the fourth century, the Church has celebrated on this day the most ancient feasts of Our Lady, to commemorate her ritual Purification and the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. The feast has been celebrated with the blessing and procession of candles to signify that Christ has come as the light of the world.

    By means of a parable, our Lord teaches us about the mystery of iniquity (as St Paul calls it): the weeds growing unchecked among the weeds. Not long before the day of judgement will the weeds be rooted up; in the Church on earth both saints and sinners are living side by side.

    Even the humblest object such as a candle, may serve as a symbol of the most high, of the most holy. It represents Christ the divine light, 'a light of revelation to the gentiles and the people of Israel.'
