Very slow for me too. I logged into this forum with the intention of creating a thread on the subject.

I've been with Eircom for years, rarely if ever had a problem with speed, but over the week I've been unable to use my regular streaming sites for sports due to it being so slow. Like Niamh above, it was fine this morning and early afternoon but has dropped off since around 5pm. I've ran scans, re-booted etc but nothing is working so I've given up for tonight.

Using regular internet for browsing Boards, Facebook etc is fine though. Strange.

Thanks for feedback guys. Must be a problem like the email issue last week. A 200Mb file is taking me over two hours:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭Stormwrench

I think I've been having a similar problem. 8mb service but my DL speed has been 1.74mbps for over a week, and my upload speed is practically non-existant. Can't check emails, can't watch streams, my browsers are essentially broken from how slow things are. My games are mostly fine, aside from my PS3 Street Fighter where it seems to treat wins/losses as disconnects and steals huge amount of points from me for no reason.

Mine is back up to 18 this morning but I doubt it will last very long. The problem seems to kick in, in the afternoon and night . Paully mine is fine (ish!) for regular browsing too but I tried to watch a film last night and the laptop nearly got thrown out the window. It was 1.30 hrs long but took almost 3 hours with all the buffering.

Also I've done a speedtest on the Eircom website last night and it was coming back at 20mbps, yet every other site I tried was 1 - 2mbps so I'm not to sure how thats happening???

I'll be getting on to Eircom in the morning but if anyone comes up with anything in the mean time please let me know!!

In Limerick myself and my speeds are abysmal also, with a high ping. Glad to see it's not only me. Youtube videos stopping multiple times to load, auto loading at 240p... Terrible and this is supposed to be "next generation" broadband that's unclogged?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

Same problem again for me today. Perfect for normal internet browsing, but it just will not stream properly at all. Buffering constantly on numerous streams, even those running at 150kpbs. The strange thing for me is that I can view YouTube videos no problem, even run Spotify etc with no difficult, but it just will not stream matches.

Has anyone had any luck in contacting them? I've been busy all day so haven't got the chance myself.

I rang them earlier, after being on hold for about 20 minutes, the guy told me to reset my modem and then he spent about 15 minutes making whatever changes he said he needed to make on his system. I asked him what the problem was and he just said that he needed to make those changes and to give it about 30 minutes and the problem should be sorted. That was 3 hours ago, and my speeds are, and I didn't think it was possible, worse. Barely getting .5 mbps. Would love to know what is going on because Eircom clearly don't!!!!

no idea, something wrong though...i don't even know whether to bother ringing again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭Stormwrench

I rang them earlier, and the person I got was telling me that the problem was due to my modem, and recommended I get a new modem as my current one is rather old. So, buying one tomorrow in hopes it helps, at least until eFibre gets here.

I wouldnt be so sure, my modem is only 2 months old...i think its a problem with Eircom in general..

It seems Eircom's customer service consists of offering three options:

    1) Reset the router and all that jazz
    2) Tapping a few buttons at their end
    3) Telling one to buy a new router as that's the problem

It certainly seems to be a general Eircom issue. With today being a Bank Holiday I'm hoping it's an issue at their end that will be fixed when those concerned are back at work tomorrow.

I would not buy a router yet. i reset mine and it made no difference. i did not call them for the "Tapping a few buttons at their end" though

Don't bother getting one. I am the same as Niamh as my modem is only 2 months old aswell and getting horrible speeds.

  • Speeds gone to crap here as well! I'm also in Limerick. I'm getting fed up. My internet was gone for ten days last month and now the "crap speeds in the evening" stuff is back. Weary of it.

It's possible, I'm in Tipperary so it could well be the area... although I have friends in Kilkenny complaining too....all fairly close...

I'm closer to that sort of area too. It seems to be spread around really. People that I know in Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny also complaining.

You sure? As far as I know my modem is 6+ years old.

  • I was having this problem a few months back with slow speeds in the evening. I rang up and after a week an engineer appeared at the door. He said there was a fault in the area and whatever he did seemed to fix things. Now it's horrendous again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

May well be unrelated but I'm all over today on UPC. 120Mb fluctuating from 10-40Mb(GigE wired). Ive had issues before so may be a local fault, but this is the first time Ive seen it like this.

Well I'm having the same problem as you, as are others with relatively new modems so I really don't think thats the problem....maybe I'm wrong though. And if you've been with Eircom that long then just ask them to send you a new one anyway, you'd definitely be entitled to a free upgrade rather than having to go buy one!

and then goes back to being terrible at around noon tomorrow!

Got the red light on my router for a couple of minutes there and when I ran the full diagnostic test it was an authentication fail. I'm hoping that means they're trying something in Eircom HQ to fix the problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭SilentHunter

Watching a video at 144p and its buffering like crazy. I have had this problem since I got back from England Friday.

I just hope they will find out whats wrong tomorrow after the bank holiday.

  • I'm getting around 50 kB/s for downloads!!

This is what the eircom mod is saying on their forum...

    Hi Guys
we have had no information on any specific issue over this weekend affecting sspeeds. I have taken all available details from your posts and sent this to our network team. Our apologies that we have no further information to offer on the issue reported here but I can confirm that this issue is currently under investigation.
A full investigation from local to international connection does take time but is the only way to get to bottom of any issue.
Some members have been chasing info on this for a few months and sorry that I cannot provide a quicker response.
    Tony

The "some members have been chasing info on this for months...." bit worries me

Bet ya it goes back to normal at midnight.

    Spot on prediction.

I'm streaming a basketball game in HD now and it's like watching the TV. No buffering or any other issues at all. I tried to watch the Liverpool game earlier and it was absolutely impossible.

Same story for me today again unfortunately. Fine at around midnight last night, fine this morning before I left, home again now for the last hour and it has been acting up again.

It's getting better though, I can stream or watch videos for about 10 seconds before they freeze today whereas it's only been about 2 seconds for the last few days

Without a shadow of doubt it will be back to normal at midnight. Very frustrating.

    585kpbs here. :(

In all honesty, I don't think Eircom have any intention of sorting it or just don't know how. Reading their forums suggests that some people have had this issue for 5 months with no resolution, they'll hide behind "an investigation takes time" or "you're not in a Next Generation Broadband area" excuses. A post from one of their moderators is below:

If you look at 'nuxxx's' posts on the Talk to Eircom forum from the link below he seems to have pinpointed the issue which may be the same for us, a congestion issue perhaps. I'll fire him a PM and see if he has any more news since he last posted on there:
