Hi, sorry if this is in a sticky, but I couldn't find it. Can someone clarify what a married couple tax rate would be? This revenue page mentions tax rate of 20% on the first €41,800. Is that a combined figure between both married individuals?

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/it1.html

So does it make a difference, if say for example both individuals are on 45k. Do thay both pay 20% on the first 41,800? Or is it a combined number.

The 41800 is made up of one spouse's 20% rate band of 32800 plus 9000 of the other spouses 20% rate band. That means one spouse can have a 41800 20% rate band while the other has a reduced 20% rate band of 23800.

Moving rate bands between spouses is only useful if one spouse is earning over 32800 while the other is earning under 32800.
