Melatonin for asd child (not looking for medical advice)

The HSE child psychologist mentioned melatonin to us as our recent meeting as our young lad wakes a lot during night (1 am to 4.30 last night). I have a moral issue with giving my child something to sleep but we are desperate at this stage and it's now having a huge impact on family life. It's also impacting on the quality of time we are spending with our son as we are always totally banjaxed.

Has anyone gone through this choice?
