Redeployment

    Hi all

I have been offered a maternity post position in a secondary school starting sept. I sat the interview and the newly appointed principal called me to say that they want to employ me but the DOE want to redeploy one of their own staff into the position instead. It's not confirmed yet so I have to wait a week or longer to find out if it's going to go ahead yet. Has anyone experienced this? I phoned the department and they were reluctant to get into it with me. Though said the process is legitimate. Any thoughts?

    Thanks

I would assume the job was advertised with the line subject to redeployment panel clearance or something like that.

All jobs now have to be run by the redeployment board first as they get first choice on the job if one comes up (my understanding of it anyway) if they don't have anyone for the spot then the school can work away, if they do have someone they have first choice on it.

The person can reject it, I have seen that happen also but very rare as this person decided to retire instead of moving in the end.

I would say that your luck is out in this situation if the person wants it

Thanks for your response. I shouldn't have been interviewed until the DOE had cleared it. I suppose I'm hoping the fact they have offered me the post may carry some weight in the decision. It's tricky situation as the DOE employ me also. Anyway I understand the technicalities and was curious to know similar situations.

The job isn't yours until you sign the contract so in reality you have nothing, the school shouldn't have offered you the job until they were sure but that's their mistake the DoE won't care about that.

The redeployment situation has been ongoing for 3 years or so, your case won't be unique, I think you problem was a new principal getting ahead of themselves. In reality they had no right to offer it to you as they had not been sanctioned the position.

You have no rights in this situation from what I can see. People have been in positions for 2,3 or 4 years and have lost their jobs due to redeployment, if they had no rights to the job you certainly wouldn't have any in reality.

Little disappointing as Im sure you were delighted to get the call but its a slip up from the principal really here

I was under the impression that redeployment would not occur in the case of temporary positions e.g. maternity leave post but obviously I was wrong?!

The case I referred to was one where a teacher was within the school but like secondment, the person replacing him was obviously on a year to year contract replacing this teacher, the person being redeployed was taking this temp teachers position. If that all makes sense.

So can definitely happen into a temp position, maybe its the case that the school was under quota or even if the other teacher retured the school could still accommodate an extra teacher somehow

They haven't offered you the position OP, you said yourself they want to give you the job but the Dept want to redeploy into it. It's not the same thing. They haven't offered you the job yet.

And yes it can happen. A permanent teacher within my ETB has been doing back to back maternity leaves in my school the last two years, so effectively redeployment.

I know of a teacher who was redeployed into a school to cover a career break and then moved on again 2 years later when the career break teacher came back.

I think it is bad form to redeploy someone into a post that is only maternity leave, career break etc

Redeployment sounds great in theory but .....
