Try the pin retrieval function on motortax.ie

If the transfer has happened you will be able to tax it

you can check if there has been a change of ownership registered in the last 3 months on motortax.ie, and if it has, and you have the details you entered on the form (including email address) then click on pin retrieval on the front page and you should be able to get the pin to tax it.

Just your name and postal address.

The PIN retrieval can work to tax the car but if ownership has not changed on Shannon's database then they will just send out the new tax disc to the previous owner's address as their system hasn't been updated yet.

When you tax it online it'll ask if the Name and address are correct before you click confirm.

If they're not, and you have some sort of proof that you bought the car recently (even if that's only an email or whatever) then make sure if you do chance the trip that you have that in case you're stopped etc.

You don't need us to tell you that technically they could seize the car but in the circumstances I'd say it's unlikely.

This happened to me with my previous car. Had it about a week still with no book and was stopped by the gardai outside Tallaght.

Explained that I'd just bought the car not too long ago and he said that's fine, just tax it as soon as you can. Taxed it about a week later when I got the book, no problems

Bank holiday, rally, and impreza will all go against you though.

That's wat I was thinking. But it's ok now. I entered that stuff online and it worked. Got my pin and taxed it. So even though I've no disc the car is still taxed. I have the confirmation page saved as a picture

I have my receipt printed out and in the glovebox. Tax was good until the 30th and I wasn't going to hand them almost €300 before it was due.

Just remember you can still get done for non display so don't park it on the streets etc.

Would have to be a harsh Garda in the circumstances, very harsh.

Remember that with paper renewals for a tax expiring in March, the document actually advises you to renew during April. Antiquated month's grace and all that. Technically half the country drives around with it out a few days. :)
