What size/weight lures are you planning on using?, is it for bank or boat?

a good value option is the abu vendetta range.. they do a wide range of rods to suit most situations and wont break the bank

Can't praise my Okuma Safina X-Spin 8' rods enough. Beautiful actions, solid build, and great price.

Mine are the 10-36g models, though I wish I'd bought the lighter 5-20g models, or maybe one of each. Don't mind what you hear/read about "needing" multiple rods for different lures. Unless you're planning to throw lures way over the rod's rating, the rod will cope just fine. And personally, I prefer the fun a lighter rod delivers when playing the fish. Most pike are unfortunately far smaller than we'd like to be catching (in my case anyway... ), so using a heavy rod just in case the odd rare bigger fish comes along kind of limits or diminishes the fun you can have with smaller fish. And besides, it's not all down to the rod - the drag on the reel and the angler's skill play just as important a part as the rod in safely landing and returning any fiish.

On these rods I use either my Okuma Safina Pro RD fixed spool reels or my Okuma Tormenta baitcasting multiplier (probably not a good option if you're not used to casting with a multiplier).

    http://www.chapmansangling.co.uk/okuma-tormenta-tt266wlx-reel~14770.html

I love using these set-ups for spinning/lure fishing. With either reel, the combo is light and well balanced, and a genuine pleasure to use.

FWIW, I use PowerPro braid on all my reels, and that's not a budget item. IMO, there are no "good" budget braids out there, so I don't even consider using anything other than PowerPro.

I got all mine from Chapmans or Harrissportsmail.

I imagine more expensive gear will perform better or last longer than this budget-level Okuma gear, but I certainly wouldn't imagine the difference would be proportionate to the price difference in most cases.

For the Safina X-Spin rod, the shipping is coming to £18 (€22), making the rod costing you €53 landed.

The same rod is available from fishingmegastore (Glasgow angling centre) for the same price, but shipping is only £10.

There's a few online dealers in Ireland doing Okuma, so maybe drop them an email. They could order the rod, and shipping should be another bit cheaper. I'm sure they will price match the rod.

You're right, it was actually GAC that I got my stuff from. For that very reason - shipping was cheaper, specially as I ordered everything together except the Tormenta, which I got from Harrissportsmail. Chapmans are a sister of GAC's to my knowledge, so I couldn't understand why shipping was dearer. I got my stuff in 2011, so I imagine there are a few Irish shops doing Okuma stuff by now.

Ok well iv sent them an email asking about deliver as there is another item i seen on that website iv been after :) so ill see what they say back. It said on the website free delivery on orders over 59 pound but would that include me in ireland do you think?

They have a few nice rods on the website and reels and alot of other stuff too but im going to look online here 1st and see what i can get hopefully they have what im looking for:).

Do you know any sites where have a wide rang on savage gear stuff in ireland as there is a lure bag im after and its made by them?

"Free Shipping" on UK websites is usually restricted to UK addresses. The only exception I've come across is Jackson Sports (an outdoor/adventure sports shop, not an angling shop). I imagine the reason they do free shipping to ROI is that they're based in NI, so there's no air/sea shipping costs to get stuff from mainland UK to ROI.

The shops I browse most regularly (most of whom I've bought from) are:

    http://www.chapmansangling.co.uk/feature-home.html
    http://www.harrissportsmail.com/
    http://www.anglersworld.ie/
    https://www.tacklebargains.co.uk/
    http://www.fishtec.co.uk/

Here's Harrissportsmail's range of SG lure storage (I don't know who in ROI dos a good range of SG stuff):

Seller159 you can use ParcelMotel to deliver your rods down south. It will cost you €6 for oversize items and you will be able to collect them off your closest Nightline depot. I've ordered few rods and larger bits using this method ;)

Maybe im old fashioned lads but if someone is not sure on what rod or reel to get would they not be better to go to a well stocked irish shop and handle a few maybe try put a few reels on a few rods in the shop and get a feel for what they like and want??....then compare prices with online shops....not always savings to be made online bare in mind!

You should be able to pick up a shimano catana 4000 reel and 9ft catana spinning rod for under 100 euro.....deffo worth a look!

I too would advocate buying in a store if you don't know the specific gear. Get a feel for the various combinations available rather than buy something online that may not be what you imagined. I buy online often, but only for equipment I am familiar with.
Go and spec it out in a store and then buy online if you must.

Your right it would be better to go have a look in store as be able to see what im getting and the feel for it but i just want to to see what a good rod would be to get and reel then maybe see what i can get around my area in fishing shops.

I have to travel a bit to a big store that will have everything as ones close to me are more sea fishing stuff as iv had a look

Have a look at adverts and done deal for rods. Some great bargains to be had from tackle tarts who are constantly "upgrading" their gear.
Id be slow enough to buy a spinning reel 2nd hand tho.
