Is there a generic coal you can buy for gas bbqs? Ie. will every gas bbq take coal?

Does anyone know where someone could buy some if so.

I assume you mean the lava rocks rather than real coal, I've seen it in many of the larger DIY stores & garden centres. You should also be able to find it in shops that sell coal effect gas fires.

And I can just throw it in on top of the grills? Is there any point to it? Would it give the charcoal type taste?

Some Gas BBQ'S don't take coal at all! The idea is that the juices from the meat fall down onto a guard that covers the jets and it is the smoke from this that is supposed to flavour the meat and give it a BBQ taste. If there are 2 grills then the lava rock sits on the lower one and if only one grill sitting over the burners, it probably doesn't take coals at all. It should also say in your instruction book if it takes coal or not.

In the instructin book that is long since in the bin! I have a sneaking suspicion that mine doesn't take coal, might take a picture of the workings of it and bring it to BandQ or the likes.

My bbq have only one grill and hence there was no place to put the coal on - sure you can't put the meat on the coal.
Just under the grill and above the fire tents (cover over the flames) there was a place where I could put another grill. Hence I managed to get my hands on a grill (a grill from an old bbq), cut it with the saw to made the right size and I put this grill between the fire tent and the grill. I'm using lava rocks, u can also use ceramic rocks available online etc. as "cheif kaiser" said, you get smoke taste regardless but if you really really really want coal then you can go to the above route.... :)
