An awful spot. Somehow managed to get crowds for a long time.

The bar as well? I know the club went ages ago.

    The whole place.

I presume it wasn't a money issue as the place was jammed most weekends. Could never understand its popularity.

I used to really like the Classic before it was 'renovated' as an older style pub. Great location, but very lacking in atmosphere IMO.

Remember being in there and a bottle of Kopparberg was about €6.50, good riddance.

    Post reported.

It had its place as somewhere stags / hens / rowdy groups could be very sloppy and not go into whatever pub I was in.

A joke presumably for saying The Classic was ever good.

The night club section is gone with couple years now too. Although I wasent a fan of the place, isnt it sad to see so many places closing down in the city all the same

Never heard of the Classic. Had to google it. Then realized that I know the place and have passed it 47million times before and never bothered going there for a pint, or never bothered even thinking "jaysus I might pop in there for a pint some day". It might as well have been a lamp post. I have no opinion on the place though.

Why does everybody hate it so much? And why do people love that it has closed down? Was it the worst place in Cork or what?

Nothing wrong with it just not to everyone's taste. Kind of characterless. Id imagine most are sad to see it go just for the sake of peoples jobs etc it was also somewhere grand for stags, hens etc where they'd get in easily enough.

That's the thing, the old Classic/Rosie O'Gradys had some character. What they replaced it with felt like it was lifted out of an airport terminal.

There are more city center bars opening now than closing, and it has been so for the past year.

The pub trade is doing quite well from my POV.

Im afraid for every new pub that is opening, one is closing. The draw of the next new pub, the same customers, just moving their monies else where. there is no money in pubs at the moment. people are fighting tooth and nail for business.

look at how desolate coburg strreet has gotten. branigans and o keefes gone. branigans especially should be thriving, with liverpool doing so well.

Branigans was booming right up too the day it closed. The lease holder had it running well had just spent a bit doing the place up( new bar new tvs new sound system) but the owner of the
Building fell behind with the bank and the bank decided the lease was too cheap (3 storey building) but the top 2 floors were falling down and un useable. When they tried too increase the rent the lease holder refused too pay. And now nearly 2 years later it is still idle

I did hear recently that a few people were looking into leasen it

I hope it does open up again. It just makes that whole area squalid with nothing there. same with o keefes but i believe that is gone for good. the place was gutted from what i have heard.

With the newly resurgent Liverpool they would have done very well in recent times too

I'm talking city center proper. The island of the city is doing tremendously well. Plenty of suburban bars closing and bars just outside the city center proper, but I'd never be too surprised by that, there aren't many destination bars outside of the island of the city.

From the top of my head the only ones worth going to are Bierhaus, Franciscan Well, Gallaghers, Abbots Ale, Sin e, Charlies, Fionn Barra's and Sober Lane.

I may have left out a few, but no other bars offer anything spectacular that makes them the bar to go to.

Incidentally, Deep South, where Door 51 and Henrys used to be, is gonna blow everywhere else in the city out of the water if we have a summer like last year. Their Beer Garden is nothing short of spectacular and I don't think they are even done fixing it up.

deep south is attracting alot of the crowd from electric and sober lane.

the courtyard and holycow are fighting it out over the crowds from bdsm/woodford.

woolshed has a fleeting clientele. the area cant sustain them all.

The courtyard will be gone soon.

    Kavanaghs probably too.

deep south will be great for those 3 days of sun, then it is just another bar. it will drop in numbers till there is just 4 people in there and the glamour turns to tumbleweeds when the next hip and trendy place opens up.

as an aside, i was in suas last week and asked for a bottle of coors.

I was told all they had was coors light.

I reckon they will close soon too, out of sheer stupidity.

Intrigued, With that be the old Jack pluggs beer garden (long thin rectangle) or has it taken advantage of the wasteland that is Henrys with a giant beer garden?

It's a big, L-shaped beer garden which goes down the right-hand side of the rear and around the back (so right up against the South Main St. car park). Some of it covered. Nice views of St. Finbarrs from there too. With better weather, Cork would be a great spot. :)

Always thought Tom Barry's up Barrack Street had a good beer garden. Its a pub which is still doing quite well too.

Is BDSM losing customers already ?

Its certainly part of the outdoor part of "The Village". Looks a great beer garden. Does the sun hit it or is always shaded?

The rear of the building runs along (some of) the southern side, so that side probably wouldn't get too much sun, but most of it would be fine, especially the back end in the evenings.

I don't know but it could use a new DJ or two, IMO. Same tunes week in week out. Can't go down well with the discerning rocker.

Used to go in there quite a bit.. Took a break for a while and went back a few weeks ago.

Seems to be a totally new crowd in there.

Used to be bikers and their women and a few more cool heads.. But a few weeks ago it just seemed to be a few hippies, and a bit of riff-raff.

Won't be back there for a while to be honest.

It's defo a big change from what it used to be.
