Mercedes C180 (2002)

    Hi,

I'm looking for a mechanic who has the mercedes diagnostic software and could come up to my house near Stepaside to have a look at my 2002 mercedes C180. There's a timing problem which I suspect may be related to the timing chain having jumped a tooth. I can't drive the car and I'm wary of taking it to a main dealer as I've been 'mugged' by them in the past.

I just want to find out if it's a relatively straightforward problem or a bigger issue. I had the top gears and timing chain completely replaced about 2 years ago. The car isn't worth that much and I don't want to sink any significant additional funds into it. Having said that I would pay to have it fixed if it was a relatively inexpensive repair.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated?

    Thanks,
    Mark

I am only expressing my experience in the past.

There was a timing problem with BMW 2005 car ,we called in to dealer to get a price quote and come back with €1600. I was shocked.
then one of my friend knows a guy who work in bmw dealer ,he also work for himself at the weekend . We called that guy and he charged us € 700 for 20 minutes work with his special diagnostics computer..

    take it from here...

Are you sure it needs to be connected to the Star system? Are you getting any malfunctions on your display?

Might be worth getting an ELM327 adaptor off ebay and downloading Torque on your mobile

When my C180 started misfiring i used Torque to see which cylinder was the issue. Swapped some coil packs around and (touch wood) it has not come back

    Hi Spike,

thanks for the feedback. I'm getting warning lights on the dash and have almost completely lost power. The engine misfiring is causing the car to rock from side-to-side. I think I definitely need to get the diagnostics checked. I suspect it may be that the timing chain tensioner has become slack, causing the chain to jump a tooth on the top gear.

    Cheers,

Hey I work in a Mercedes and BMW specalist have the star diagnostics. Have done tons of those chains. And I can tell you the chain is so light it's quite possible that it has gone again. Drop me a pm if u need more info. Fairly straight forward job

Could very well be the tensioner but before you bring it anywhere i'd swap the coilpacks around to see if the misfire moves to a different cylinder

Also might want to check the breather pipe underneath the air filter box. These perish over time and can cause misfires. Its a 10-20 euro part you can fit yourself. Some garages incorrectly diagnose as an issue with the MAF sensor

You can't be serious. If it's missing that bad it's clearly not a coil gone. Your mad for the coil packs and as for the torque app it's like not even in the same category. There are plenty of issues with that engine I've seen over time. And being honest haven't changed a lot of coil packs on them at all. Not a common problem. The breather pipe u refer to would give completely different symptoms also

Ok so the Op shouldnt bother with a few free simple checks? but should go straight to a specialist and pay to hook up to Star?

Never suggested Torque was an alternative to Star, of course it isnt but it will help the OP do some diagnostics which will be cheaper than hooking it up to Star

I was suggesting a few checks the OP could do before going to a specialist as i had a similar issue.
Apologies for trying to save him/her a few bob

That's fair point but I'm just stating facts that I'm around these cars everyday and being honest I can't remember the last time I seen a coil goin on them engines. So from my experience I'm giving him the proper info. But being honest as you say any code reader will give him the fault codes not a issue there.
But getting fault codes knowing what to do with them is another.
