Motherboard + Cpu upgrade worth it?

Time of year again that I'm getting itchy feet and I'm going to change up my system a bit.

I was looking at getting a new CPU (I'm rocking out a i5 2500k Sandy Bridge) but really want the latest generation i7.

Is the benefit worth the cash (bearing in mind its every 3 or 4 years that I upgrade my processor)?

My bird has decided to pay for a motherboard as an anniversary present so that one thing I don't have to worry about.

Is the computer just used for gaming?

Do you have the processor overclocked?

Yep used 98.6% for gaming and have it overclocked to 4ghz

No point upgrading tbh, not worth the money. Its a quality CPU and no real difference in the overclockable I5's in the last three years.

If you want to upgrade to an I7 you might get an extra 5 FPS or something like that but games are not using hyperthreading at the moment.

2500k is a quality processor! I think you could push it slightly higher like 4.4 ghz as well rather than 4ghz.

New Intel range been released in the last quarter of this year I believe

Yawhat is right hold off. Seriously no real gotta get that gains. New broadwell supposedly "30%" faster over haswell. But that remains to be seen. But the newer mobos should be DDR4 capable.

Personally don't see a point. Like yawhat said 5 fps if you lucky. Sure a decent new driver "might" squeeze that. If you were to believe nvidia and the hype masters.

I have the same CPU and I won't even think of upgrading until Skylake. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylake_(microarchitecture)

Crank up your CPU to 4.4Ghz or even further. Sandy Bridge chips are crazy when it comes to overclocking, squeeze the most out of it. Make sure you've a good cooler and you're ready to go. If you don't, invest into Cooler Master 212 EVO.
The difference between Sandy Bridge and Haswell is somewhat noticeable, but it's not something you would expect. Definitely not worth the money. Especially if you're gaming.
