I planned on bringing a visiting friend along to the N.M.O.I on Monday.

    They are closed.

They close on Mondays ....Including Bank Holidays, The National Museum of Ireland.

What the hell is that about, who is this for, staff? Certainly not visitors.

    I despair, I really do.

This is not limited to that museum, or Ireland, it's the norm across most of Europe that museums and similar close on Mondays.

Fairly sure most museums/art galleries etc. are closed on Mondays. Presume it's cos they open all weekend when most people are free, so need a day for staff/cleaning etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,609 ✭✭✭stoneill

It has always been closed on Mondays - always.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,416 ✭✭✭✭Collie D

They open on Sundays. It's quite common for museums to close on Monday.

the staff work weekends don't you know, you hardly expect them to work a 7 day week do you?
    or maybe you do...

I'd say that monday is the least popular day , makes sense to take that off.

Is this the free National Museum of Ireland?

Mondays is the standard day for them to close all around the world.

Do you even go to Museums brah?

    The Louvre closes on Tuesdays.

    Just to be different like.

    Mondays, yes, no problem with that at all, however;
Do they not have the intelligence to realise that BANK HOLIDAY Monday's are a completely different day, in fact more people are likely to want to visit on these days than any other.

They could, you know, close on the Tuesday following a BANK HOLIDAY Monday...

    Yeah

It's so they can have a day off after working all weekend. Is that ok with you?

    I despair, I really do:rolleyes:

Yep. It's you basically, a lot of restaurants close on Mondays too AFAIK, Sunday night and Monday night tend to be some people's weekend.

Shame no one consulted you before taking these decisions on the off chance you might have plans, like.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,652 ✭✭✭I am pie

Bank Holiday, even more obvious that they would be closed.

It being a public holiday and that.

    Opening Hours
    Tuesday - Saturday: 10am - 5pm
    Sunday: 2pm - 5pm
Closed Mondays, Christmas Day and Good Friday

People have absolutely no concept that those working in the service/hospitality/tourism sector occasionally need a day off and take it as a personal affront when kfc is closed on Christmas.

Oh right. So you want the staff to have to come in on their day off because it's now your day off. I see.

I was initially on the side of the OP considering that the museum is part of the tourist sector and May bank holiday weekend is quite a busy time for tourism but, after seeing what way the wind is blowing on this topic I'd like to pile in

WTF OP, Get with the program!! sheesh! etc

It's funny how a thread can turn so quickly on an OP :D

Barbers too close on Mondays. MOMA in New York closes on a Thursday for ****s and giggs.

People who work in the private service/hospitality/tourism sector know that bank holidays are when a large amount of their annual salary is made, because that is when people have time off and are able to use the service/hospitality/tourism sector.. can you grasp how that works?

A bit like the pub makes most of it's money when most people are not at work, is that clear for you?

Obviously different for people who work in the public service/hospitality/tourism sector who get paid regardless of visitors.

I'd prefer if the building next door to the National Museum was open more often and the shower who work in there earned what we pay them.

As somebody who works in a museum the one thing we always have to keep in mind is the international nature of the audience. That means that consistency is vital. Museums generally close on a Monday. The tourists know this. They do not know the dates of Irish bank holidays so deciding to change the opening hours every time there is a bank holiday is not an option.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,299 ✭✭✭✭The Backwards Man

Tourist attractions should be open seven days a week. You ever see a tourist take a Monday off?

Why did you say the highlighted in the OP then, and include the fact that it's every Monday and not just bank holidays if it's only the bank holiday part that you have a problem with?

Presumably you must have enough staff for rotation if you can accomodate the bank holiday.

    Funded by the working public.

If they were open Mondays and closed on Tuesdays, sure as shít on a shovel people would decide they'd have to bring their friend on a Tuesday just so they could rant about it. Same people who turn up at a restaurant 10 minutes before closing time and demand to get served a full meal.

Plenty of other things to do this Bank Holiday Monday. http://whatsonin.ie/dublin/

If you were only visiting that city for one day, you would leave with a sour taste if everything was closed.
