Quite the golf portfolio he has built up.

Doonbeg a couple of months back and it appears he is close to agreeing a takeover of Turnberry.

Guess he may get his British Open after all.

Why would Turnberry sell to him? I assumed this was a members course.

As far as I remember it's actually owned by a load of Arabs in dubai

"The revered South Ayrshire course, which is almost guaranteed to host its fifth Open in the next decade, is currently owned by Leisurecorp, a subsidiary of the Dubai government, and has been unofficially up for sale since the global financial downturn hit the emirate so hard."

I only got around to watching You've Been Trumped lately. He's not a nice man and I'd hate to see him get his greedy paws on Turnberry.

As opposed to a group of oil rich Arabs?

In fairness to him he loves the game and has revamped courses greatly. Look at doral recently. He seems like a good golf man even if he is a big time developer.

Just means that the ordinary Joe will not get a chance to play courses like that. The course he built in Scotland charges eye-watering green fees. I expect Doonbeg to follow suit. I thought those days were behind us after the crash but fees do seem to be creeping up again at some of the really good courses. Mount Juliet is now €90. Superb course but beyond my reach now

Turnberry is a course I really want to play so I hope he doesn't up the price too much

A good golf man with zero respect for anyone. He's a business man and like most of the cronies he's in it for the cash and as a result average joe gets trodden on.

Golf is big business so I suppose it will draw a business man with a love of the game. Yes he has little respect for people which was evident with trump Aberdeen but apart from that what is the problem with him owning golf clubs?
There are British open venues that are still in the dark ages in terms of equality but people think they are fine.

Also giving out about not being able to play doonbeg etc as he will raise prices doesn't really hold any weight for me as they would be closed without him and nobody would be playing them.

With respect come on! Are you telling me any developer in Ireland who built courses in the boom years weren't business men wanting to make a profit? Most of those too would have trodden on the average joe too.

Doonbeg future was never in doubt, it was a going concern and always would be with or without him.

This is the type of bs that he uses to get favours from the local council etc

He didn't save or add a single job

His ultimate aim is to make money...I've no problem with that. You say he loves the game but what is he doing to grow the game. Nothing. Bottom line these are all investments to make money and not for the love of the game.

    Trump Turnberry.

Crap! That's probably going to be one off my Scottish courses list.
Thankfully I'm not short a course or two around these parts.

Turnberry is one that he'd be hard pressed to make any significant changes to. I bet you'll see an architect brought in just to ruffle a few feathers, but they won't really do much.

It's already a very, very resort-like feel so no major changes there either. The price will probably go up a bit unfortunately, but there are enough courses on the Ayrshire coast that if he pushed it too far he'll outprice the market. Right now, Prestwick and Troon are outpricing themselves...so that doesn't help.

I played Turnberry for 60 quid while Prestwick and Troon wanted 155...no brainer.

why will the price go up?

he got it for £17m less than what the previous crowd paid for it. a bargain :)

The Trump brand is 'aspirational'... in Trump's thinking. Once a place has his name on it it becomes a higher premium product for which people are prepared to pay. I'd be very surprised if he leaves the prices of Turnberry and Doonbeg as they are.

    Why?

Jumping to the logica/illogical conclusion he'll hike the prices up!

Well that's a bit more rational than not playing it because Trump owns it.

It's the one BO course that I have actually played and I enjoyed it tremendously. My 1st memory of watching a major golf championship was my father forcing me to watch the last 9 holes of the Duel in the Sun when all I wanted to do was be outside playing football.

What I was amazed to discover this week that the 77 Open was the 1ST Open in Turnberry and there have only been 3 since then.

It does have a pretty decent list of champions
    77 - Watson
    86 - Norman
    94 - Price
    09 - Watson

Have you played Muirfield? It's a different style of course, but fun in its own right. I don't think I've ever seen a course that I thought would be so tame, and then looked at my scorecard through 6 holes and thought, "Well damn, not as easy as I thought!"

You are entitled to your opinion but I refuse to believe that Tom didn't 2 putt from the back of the 18th Green. In my reality Tom won that tournament and no amount of so called "facts" will convince me of anything else:D

It was 1989 and it was a time when I was playing virtually no golf as I was living in London. I played it the Sat of the Ryder cup so I guess it must have been later Sept / early Oct. I had a fever and a hangover. The wind was just short of gale force and it rained so much you couldn't see Ailsa Craig. But I loved every minute of it. Probably because as a kid, Watson was my hero (still is). I can't remember much about the course but I do remember getting a pair of Watson style checked pants for my birthday when I was 12.

Is there a golf club in Doonbeg? Ie a club of members that use the course as opposed to a golf course? I know there is a local club (for locals) in Waterville.

Yes, there are members and Trump has said (wink wink) that their entitlements will remain the same... for how long is anyone's guess.

Apparently just bought another course in NC as well according to a buddy back home. He's not shy of late, that's for sure.

With all the controversy with Donald Trump and the presidential election in the US, do people have a problem now playing his golf course in Doonbeg.. i.e. giving your hard earned cash to Trump? Nothing personal about the wonderful local staff who work there but comments about immigrants / Women / Race and his known constant lies have dominated the news across the world. As the PGA has dropped Doral and a number of other courses from their schedule, do people now have an aversion to playing Trump Doonbeg? I'd be interested to hear what the golfing population think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 768 ✭✭✭wardides

Clearly not doing great, deal on justgolf.ie for it at the moment. Quite decent as well, 90 quid for a 2 ball with strokesaver & range balls.

There was an offer for Doonbeg last week; 2 green fees, stroke saver, pull trolly €90. I've wanted to play the course for a while so I bought one. I don't particularly want to give the Donald my money but I probably give money to companies I don't like every day.

Have played doonbeg twice over the summer and the greens were in awful shape. Luckily both times I was playing for free but I couldn't believe that Americans were paying 180 per person when the greens were hollow cored, sanded and grass was about a half inch high. It was a disgrace really.

Course itself was in great shape and off the black tees is really intimidating. Have been told they have an eye on the Irish open in 2019. Can't see it getting it myself regardless of trumps association with it as the area just doesn't have the infrastructure to put on a tournament IMO.

I saw that, phoned them and they will have fairway mats in play for all of the offer period so I passed, hate mats

Surely worth 45 notes all the same?

Half thinking of playing it next week, anybody play it recently?

Agreed, that is not golf - we're pretty lucky here is Ireland. In Scotland a lot of courses, especially on the west coast move to mats for 5 months of the year and temporary greens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 241 ✭✭idle

Presume you can just move the ball to the edge of the fairway? Where most of my drives will probably be anyway

    FYP :pac:

Played Newcastle West years ago with fairways out of play and drop to rough on closest side. Hit nearly every fairway. Never got anywhere near that FIR since  :D

Played back there this summer in august, course was immaculate but as an earlier poster said the greens were very slow.
Apparently they redid most of them and couldn't cut them down as short as they'd like to allow the greens to bed in. If anyone has played Lahinch lately the Dell (par 3 5th) green was also redone and was very similar, longer grass and slower.
I think they hope to have them faster next year as the new greens mature.
Its funny how they have had to go back to the old Doonbeg branding as no one was buying the garish trump branded stuff.
Also seeing pictures of the orange one everywhere was off putting.

Let me rephrase, October is fine they said but mats from Nov to March, I can't make it this month so had all the voucher period in my head when I made that post, if you can make it before the mats then I'd do so if at all possible...
