Pin Mapping

    Hi all,
Just looking for a bit of help. I'm looking to "Pin" approx 300 locations on a Map of Ireland and then save this page and print it in Size A2.
Does anyone know if I can do this easily online using any free mapping software?
I don't require anything too fancy, just to be able to Pin these locations and possibly colour code the script according to the category they fall into. I hope that I've explained what I need clearly enough - I'm not exactly an IT genius!!
I don't think that you can do this using Google Maps.
Thanks very much for your help.

Well you can create a custom map in Google with Pins but I'm not sure if they can be coloud coded. The main issues I'd say would be whether an overall view of the country on Google maps would translate well into an A2 print as you'd be just taking a screengrab. It might be a better idea to obtain a high res map and use something like Photoshop to insert your Pins. Something like this mock-up below perhaps?

Thanks very much for the suggestion. Its definitely worth a try. I'll try find a map with all towns and the main roads. Is there an easy way to Photoshop the points into map? Thanks again

I'm guessing that you don't own photoshop, the software.

To work with high image resolutions that are not blocky at A2 scale, you tend to need a computer with lots of memory or to use vector graphics drawing packages like illustrator. (The boards post at http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=70623665 found a basic illustrator map of ireland. Doesn't look adequate for what you want though.)
There is a detailed IDA one in PDF form at http://www.idaireland.com/ida-files/docs/locations/map_ireland.pdf, but that's copyrighted.

But the cheap way to attempt it is
You could try using the free paint.net.
Load your high resolution map. Set it as a background layer.
Add one or more layers above the background. By default it is blank and transparent. Draw your marker pins onto this and copy and drag to where you want them.
When changes are done on a layer, they shouldn't be mucking up the map underneath.
