They would have to be food-grade and sufficiently heatproof. You'd need to know the exact specs of what they're made from.

    Have they been used

    And what type of oil?

You can buy 25L buckets for 4 euro . 5 euro with a lid.

    Nice new and clean.

Don't see why not once they're properly cleaned out.

After all the hard work and expense of getting to fermentation process with 5 or 10 gallons of wort, you would risk tainting your beer with the faint taste of oil or detergent over an old oil drum.

Im with oblivious. Risks outweigh the benefit.

Depends on what you mean "clean" plastics will leach an extract over time in various conditions ie boiling, low ph of fermenting wort and increased alcohol content

you can get 33 ltr (7 gallon) fermenters with lids online at HBC for €11, they're food grade and have graduated markings to track the volume. For the sake of an extra €6 you know what your getting.
And for a few extra quid you have have taps/airlocks etc. included. If the drums your looking at have been used for oil etc., IMO it's not worth risk of spoiling a batch (or more) over saving a few quid for a FV.

Unless your taking the saying "this stuff is rocket fuel" literally when planning your recipes. :pac::p

Ah! I assumed they were metal. I would definitely not use a plastic that had contained engine oil. Having said that I have used a (spotless) "blenders" sunflower oil bucket for fermenting cider before. Worked out fine.
