Hi all I'm planning on going to NUIG next year. As a Galway City native I'll be staying at home and I was just wondering how people think this'll affect me? I'm the fairly shy type so I'm a little worried it'll impede on me making friends! :(

Join as much societies as possible. Get involved. If you do that you will have a blast

If you live in the city and your parents aren't control freaks it'll be grand. I lived at home for first year, parents live in salthill so it was a bit of a pain getting home after nights out but apart from that it was grand.

Don't worry about that just enjoy the college experience itself. You don't have to worry about rent and bills. Plus shared accommodation can bring its own hassles.

Look at the positives - no bills, no rent, nice warm house to come home to! Lots of students stay at home and commute to college. Dont let it effect you making friends. Like the other poster said, join societies and clubs, get involved in as many things as you can, and force yourself into social events to improve your confidence. I am a naturally shy person, I'm not the going out getting-plastered-type (although definitely partial to afew tipples!). I'm just after finishing my final year and I have loved every minute of it! Most importantly when you start college, challenge yourself to say YES to invitations, take up new hobbies, talk to that person beside you in a lecture, smile and say hi to people you meet on the corridor. Best of luck in college hun and don’t worry you will have a great time!

I lived at home. It sucked as it was fairly far out of town (Boleybeg, in Connemara) but it was very manageable. Make sure to join a lot of societies and clubs.
