    Hey Lads,

I was giving the bike an aul spit and polish. Had it up on the rear paddock stand and noticed the oil windows was fooking empty!

I let the bike run for about 10 minutes then knocked it off. Slapped it on the side stand but pulled it up straight by the bars to see if any oil would show in the window. Maybe 4mm of Oil shows in the window if i tilt the bike onto its right slightly :(

I'm assuming this level is too low to safely drive the bike :confused:

Assume yours is the same as mine so yes its too low as its below the low mark. 10w40 goes into your bike, handy to get in any petrol station or if your stuck this evening iv some in the shed you can have

Cool man. I will nip around to the garage and look for some and give you a shout if they have none. I'm guessing I can just pop open the cap above the window and pour some in till it hits the level?

    I'm a useless bastard!

Yeah just be careful not to over fill it. dont fill to the line, somewhere on the high side between the two lines will be grand.

More importantly Goodlad where is the oil gone? It must be burning oil or you have a leak somewhere.....get somebody to hold the bike straight and level with stands (side stand or centre stand if you have one) that will be the correct measurement. I too have about 2 litre's here if you stuck....so would lookbehindyou he is closer.

Sorted. A newspaper funnel did the job.
Took 600ml of oil and is in between the high and low mark. Next up I gotta suss out emptying the filter. Pretty sure that's about due

Deffo not leaking anyway. I park in the same spot every day outside the house and in work. There is no spots on the ground from oil that i can see anyway.

Cheers man. It was in for a service not too lon ago. I think all that's really due at the min is an oil and filter. Which is really something i should figure the fook out! Same goes for adjusting my chain! hahaha! Never done it myself.

If it was in for a service not too long ago and it needed oil now either

A: It was not serviced properly
B: Its burning oil....is there a smell when you are riding it, or coloured smoke from the exhaust. Or is it starting arkwardly lately?

What bike are you driving? On mine (1200gs) after a run you're suppose to put it on the main stand and leave it for 10 minutes. If you don't leave it and check straight away, it can look empty.

Sv1000. Ah i usually check it just by grabbin the bars and pulling the bike upright for a few seconds and the window fills.

I've never owned, 'nor have experience of an SV1000 but as a rule of thumb most owners of big twins or thumper's expect them to consume more oil than an inline four.

It seems like you know some of the lads here who have some experience doing their own mechanics so it might not be a bad idea to have one of the more experienced to help you through a service and general routine checks etc.. They're really not rocket science and will save you a wade of money over the years, and might potentially save your life too.

you put bike in oil it alright yea?

best to give it a bit of time after turning off the engine before checking the level - a lot of the oil will still be in the galleries, and will take a bit to drain down to the sump.
