Having read the article, I would suggest that some of the victims being gay was purely coincidental.

Correlation does not mean causation. It looks like it could only be a coincidence that some of them were gay. By the law of averages, some of them were always going to be gay.

I agree, there is no evidence to suggest they are targeting gay people. The evidence points instead to them targeting specific lanes/streets, perhaps because they know there will be drunk (disorientated) people there.
