Mods, I'm not looking for medical advice so I hope this thread is ok.

I'm going for an non-pregnancy related ultrasound next week. I've never had one before so I'm unsure what clothes to wear. I will be going straight from work so will be in business clothes.

Any help would be great. Thanks :)

I'm assuming it's external? You'll be asked to pull up your top and pull down your trousers a little bit. They tuck paper in to your clothes so they don't get gel on them. I've had ultrasounds in every type of outfit. If you've to take anything off (for a wand/internal ultrasound) they will give you a towel to cover up. Just like getting a leg wax or a massage.

    Thanks. It is external.

If you're going home straight after maybe bring a spare top in case you get gel on ya.

+1 to a spare top, and perhaps don't wear your favourite underwear. I've gotten a few in the last while & no matter how much paper they give you, that feckin' gel gets everywhere! Good luck with the scan :)

    What are they scanning?
    Are you overweight?
They mightn't be able see the detail they need if you are by external scan.
Then you might have to take off whatever bottoms you're wearing for an internal scan.

I've had a kidney ultrasound, and both transvaginal and external ultrasound for ovary/uterine reasons.

If its an external one, clothes that you can access at the area, for instance the waist if its a tummy one, so a jumpsuit/ dresses might be awkward to adjust, better to go in separates. Extra top is a good idea to bring.

If its transvaginal, you take off your trousers/ underwear but could leave a skirt on, and you are given a paper drape to cover yourself. But the scan is done in a darkened room usually so that's something.

Thanks all. Skirt and top seem like the best option. I'm going straight home after but I'll bring a spare top just in case.

Yes, definitely just lose fitting clothes that can be easily accessed for pulling up or pulling down purposes!

Also, if you have been advised of having a full bladder (usually with ovarian or other gynecological related scans) I personally would say get to the hospital a little earlier than your appointment and tank up only when there. Do not start knocking back the water at home and arrive at the clinic like a beach ball, ready to burst! I've been that soldier, it's not pleasant! :o

Best of luck with the scan, hope it goes well for you xx

Thanks. Had it done on Tuesday so waiting for my GP to ring with the results. Waiting for the results is nearing as uncomfortable as the full bladder. :-/

Oh that full bladder sensation is awful! I'm crossing my legs just thinking about it :o

Hope you get good results, try not to worry xx
