Painting satin over gloss

Im currently doing up an old pine blanket box, I painted it with primer and then a coat of gloss paint. But I'm not happy with the finish, it's too shiny. I think I'd prefer a satin finish. What's the best way of painting over gloss? I presume I can't just slap on a coat of satin? Would another coat of primer be best or do I need to sand it down?

I'd just give it a good sanding with smooth paper/pads to take the gloss/shine off it and then put on the satin. Assuming they're both oil based.
