Jcn 23 I think, I came upon it yesterday, whoa! That's a quick approach!

I think that's called a LILO junction? Didn't think they were allowed on motorways.

The approach slip roads are very short too, I really had to slam on the brakes to make the turn!

They are compact lilo's. The previous junction at Roscrea has the exact same layout. They're the only two junctions of this type on the M7 and yes they are pretty tight.

I really don't know why they deviated from the standard dumbbell style here. I can't imagine that traffic volumes using these 2 junctions would be significantly lower than any other rural M7 junctions to warrant a lower spec design.

Also a new service facility to be known as the cringingly awful Barack Obama plaza is set to open in Moneygall during the summer. So one would expect traffic through the junction to increase as a result.

Very strange jcn to see on a motorway. Totally inadequate and I would say dangerous.

The WHAT plaza? Because that's his ancestral home? Yea, 'course it is.

Them junctions are a ridiculous planning decision.
Same junctions can be found on m18 Ennis, crusheen and gort exits

I really don't see the issue with LILO junctions. They are fine as long as the slip roads are long enough to allow acceleration up to motorway speeds and the that the corner radius on entry is wide enough to allow for a safe exit.

Just because this LILO doesn't conform to these standards does it mean that all LILOs are automatically unsuitable for motorways. Anything but.

Yeah, just lengthening the slips would be a vast improvement.

It is a busier junction now with the service station. I presume it would be far too disruptive to try and redevelop the junction to a regular one? I doubt it would be on Tipperary Co Co priority list and certainly not on the NRA's
