    Hi all,

So sorry, this has probably been asked a lot, but using the search functions doesn't return an answer to this question.

Just wondering if I am eligible for Rent Allowance, as a friend of mine is adamant that I would be.

I live in Dublin, with my girlfriend, in a two bed rented apartment. We are both working. We pay 1200 a month in rent.

I am terribly naive when it comes to these tax(?) matters, and I'm just wondering if someone could give me an answer.

Apologies again if this question has been asked to death.

    Rent allowance, no.
    Rent relief, yes! :)

This should supply you with the answers you need. €1200 is over the RS eligibility amount.

Rent allowance and rent relief are two separate things. While you wouldn't be entitled to rent allowance you would be entitled to claim a tax credit called rent relief.

It can be done through Revenue.

    Thanks all for your responses.

Am familiar with Revenue website, so will have a look there.

    Thanks again!

If you are renting accommodation privately (whether in Ireland or outside the State) and pay income tax, you may be eligible for tax relief on part of your rent. You can only claim this relief if you were already renting at 7 December 2010. If you were not renting on that date and you subsequently entered into a rental agreement, you will not be able to claim tax relief on your rent. However, if you were renting at 7 December 2010 you will continue to qualify for this relief even if you enter a different rental agreement after that date. The relief is being phased out and 2017 will be its last year.
