    Hi Lads/Lassies..

Male 23 running my first marathon on 12/7/2014. Would be grateful if somebody could give me a target time. My own is 4 hrs but maybe I could do better. I want to do more than finish, I want a good time!I done a few races recently.

    10k: 42:11
    Half Marathon: 1:37:48

Thanks in advance looking forward to your response.

I ran my first one last year and the best advice I got was not to worry about the time just make sure you enjoy it and the time will take care of itself. If you put too much pressure on yourself to achieve a certain time you run the risk of having a nightmare thus putting yourself off ever trying another one. So run it, enjoy it, lap it up and once the pressure is off aim for a goal time in your second, third, fourth marathons.....

I second the advise of the above poster...don't worry about time and just enjoy it. I was in the same boat as you this time last year and ran a marathon off very poor training. My shorter race times were fine (similar to yours) but I didn't focus enough on getting long, hard runs in. I set myself a goal of sub 4 but bonked at mile 21 and finished in around 4.15 with the last 5 miles absolute torture, both physically and mentally.

If you dont have sufficient training done for a marathon I would warn you to respect the distance and not go chasing times...That being said, i ignored all similar advice given to me last year :)

You're both absolutely correct - but the OP still needs to set some sort of target pace so that he doesn't blow his load in the first half of the race and end up having an awful first marathon.

OP for experienced marathon runners I believe the rule of thumb is double your half time plus 10%. But your experience of running long distances plus the extent and type of training, along with race day conditions, will determine exactly how you go on the day.

Yeah...based on your current half time, I would probably aim for 4 hours @ 9 min/mile. You will need to focus on getting long runs of up to 20 miles in your legs though.

Would it not be better to post your advice on the forum so others can learn from it rather than via pm. I don't see the need for the secrecy.

I noticed the same thing on your other thread. I thought the point of this forum was to help other people along as much as possible. I've gotten a lot of good info here from older threads so I don't see the point of doing pm.

I had similar half an 10K times last year and ran a 3:35 in Dublin. This was faster than I intended, a mate influenced me at the start line and admittedly the last 4-5 miles were very tough. Enjoyed it apart from the last few miles and was delighted I pushed myself but as already mentioned it all depends on what training/long runs you've done to date. Set a realistic goal, don't get carried away at the start and if you feel good later on then keep pushing on.
