Should US Prosecutor get fired

US prosecutor and ex football player Mark Plants has found himself on a domestic battery charge for smacking his 11 year old son with a belt. The complaint has been made by his ex wife and mother of the boy who admits herself to disciplining the boy in a similar manner. Mr Plants a man who has done quite a lot in his five year term in office now may loose his job. Given that public opinion in the US is different than in Ireland on the matter of corporal punishment and that there is no law prohibiting the use of a belt in punishing a child in the US, is it reasonable that this guy should be dismissed from office or is this merely political mud slinging stirred up by an embittered and jealous ex wife. What's the views?

Well, if he does get fired for this, there's gonna be some punishment for his 11 year old....

If there is no law prohibiting the use of a belt in disciplining a child and all he did was discipline the child then how has been been charged with domestic battery ?

Edit: Whipped an 11 year old boy 10 times with a belt for pushing his stepbrother. The guy's an idiot. Couldn't care less if he loses his job.

    Embittered ex wife?

Dunno. Sounds more like being an abusive scumbag caused it than a jealous ex.

The wife is a 2 faced bitter c u next tuesday?

Its OK for her to do it but not for him? I was given the belt when I was a kid and guess what, it didn't kill me and made me respect my parents.

    That's grounds enough for dismissal.

I was given the belt as a child and it just left me with no respect for authority and meant me and my father didn't have much of a relationship for a long time. I got hit in school by the teachers too and it left me with no respect for the education system.

It's nice you were able to take a beating and fall into line but it doesn't work a lot of the time.

I remember seeing that clip. Guy was really laying into her with a belt. I don't know anything about how a US prosecutor is appointed, nor do I know what it takes to get them removed. That don't stop me however, as this is AH!

I believe he should be smacked across the face with a particularly smelly trout, and then forced to do a 5000 piece puzzle of a nude Katie Perry that is missing the boobs.

There is a mountain of difference between smacking your child on the a$$ for being bold and taking out your belt and beating a child.

The fuktard should be jailed, and people ask should he lose his job:confused:.

And yes ive smacked my childern on the a$$ a couple of times. More for effect and show than to actually hurt the child. Ive lost the head with the kids once or twice and smacked a little harder than should have, i was disgusted with myself afterwards. Ive maybe resorted to a smack of the bum 6/7 things in total.

I would say it works more often than it doesn't. The belt was always a last resort and personally I don't agree with it but I was a handful and it was the only thing that kept me on the straight and narrow.

Does the missus use the belt on you now?

4 posts in three years and 2 of them relating to spanking children.. the other 2 about how police should have battered people. Now I'm no Hercule Poirot but there seems to be a theme here.

I'm guessing the OP is on the side of the father in this!

Are people forgetting in America they have reasonable chastisement that can include a belt or what ever the parent deems necessary. The same people slinging the mud will probably support shooting intruders on property and so on. Don't agree with belting kids but he did nothing against the law. If people have a problem then they need to address the politicians to change the laws.

Any adult who whips a child ten times with a belt deserves the same in return and a stretch in prison. Middle aged idiocy and indicative of lower intelligence as well as inability to control emotion, deserves far more than to lose his job the prick.

Not behaviour I'd approve of. However if he did nothing illegal relative to his jurisdiction I don't see why there would be a need to loose his job.

Was the wife charged too btw?

Maybe the kid thought the dad was going to give him some M&M's and not S&M!

    Easily done!!

I don't think he's going to lose his job. Domestic victims specialists, including some police officers, are asking that he not deal directly with domestic violence prosecutions until his own case is dealt with.. which is fair enough.

Yay my country. I think the wife and the prosecutor should be punished. I consider the use of a belt on a child to be a form of child abuse.
What is the irish law regarding corporal punishment?

I doubt he will be punished given his location

Depends on the interpretation of the EU laws corporal punishment has laws governing it in 16 EU states Ireland is not one of them. There is no ban on physical punishment here by parents/caregivers. But you may find yourself in hot water as a teacher for example disciplining someone's child.
The common law right of parents and others to use “reasonable and moderate chastisement” in disciplining children was confirmed in article 37 of the Children Act 1908. The Children Act 2011 repealed Article 37 but the Government has accepted that removal of the common law defence requires an explicit provision in addition to this repeal.

I don't make any apologies for my opinion that if this guy was anyone else other than someone holding public office he would be treated very differently by the courts in the US. I'm not on the side of anyone on this case as I don't know the specifics but I don't feel that all parents should be branded criminals for using corporal punishment

An adult that resorts to smacking or beating a child on a regular basis clearly has mental issues of their own and should really sake help.
