So we're looking at upgrading our broom broom and have narrowed the options down to two. Would love to get the input from the experts on the motoring forum on Boards.

So if you had to pick one - which one would it be?

    Option 1.

VW Jetta 1.6Tdi Diesel 105bhp Comfortline

    or

    Option 2.

Hyundai i40 1.7 Blue Drive 115PS/4000RPM Comfort Model

    Thanks guys....

Jetta all day everyday, i'm not buying in to the Hyundai thing at all.,in a few years you will have a car that hasn't aged well that you won't be able to give away.

Agree with above. The Hyundais are going to age like Renaults. They will look good for 3 years and drop a lot of value compared to the Jetta.

Personally, I think the i40 is a fine bus. The Jetta strikes me as dull.

Jetta for sure, I'd always go for the VAG option though.

Can't say I know about the I40 but the interior plastics in the i20 where shocking so if that's anything to go by I wouldn't be happy owning one!

At the end of the day it's up to you take both out for a spin see what you think!

I'm not a fan of VW think I'd rather go for an Skoda Octavia myself over the Jetta.

Hyundai all the way for me. I no longer buy into the VAG SHYTE image.

Test drive both .... go with which one you prefer. If it's going to be your car for a while - you need to like it.

In this case, the i40. Its just a bigger car.
Jetta is old hat now too.

    Exactly.

Hyundai for me, better spec, slightly more power, better warranty and looks that wont send you into a boredom induced coma unlike the jetta. Soft touch plastics aren't the be all and end all.

Why limit it to those two. There are other options out there and many of them are better.

If I had a choice I'd probably go for the hyundai on spec only. If it was a 2 litre Jetta Highline I'd have that. But I'd also go looking at the new Mazda 3 saloon too.

Just thinking a passat would be a more suitable competitor to I40 than a jetta

Jetta is still based on the Mk VI Golf which was just a heavily facelifted Mk V Golf designed 10 years ago. Interior is straight out of the Mk VI Golf too and looks very dated these days. Jetta is also getting a facelift in the next couple of months. Surely there should be a better deal to be got on a Passat at this stage given they are being replaced with a new model later this year?

For me, and I currently drive one as my company vehicle, VAG = dull, boring, cramped. Hyundai are modern, well specced, drive well, lots of space. On the car alone, no contest, i40 (or i30) wins. Jetta will probably score higher on resale value if thats your thing!

Hyundai's resale value is improving all the time though.

    i40 all the way.

I don't think you will get an i40 of the same year for the price of a Jetta, its a step up in models afaik.

The Jetta's competition from them would be more the i30?

Between your 2, I'd take the i40 I think. Lovely looking car and I am sure it would have a better interior quality than an i20, as its aimed at a completely different market.

Steering is a bit crappy on i40 and surely resale value is important to consider when buying with YOUR own money

I don't think resale values of Jettas are that great. A similar spec Golf will hold it's value much better as it's more desirable and most people looking for a saloon VW opt for the Passat instead. Sales of the Jetta are modest at best. I'd say it will struggle even further now that the Seat Toledo and Skoda Rapid are available despite being based on the smaller Polo, to people who want a smallish saloon. Bora and Vento were the same before it.

Resale value and stearing feel are hardly fantastic on the jetta either tbh.

Mr. Volkswagen does silicone-damped grab handles exceedingly well though.
